pictures of Adolf Hitler

Post Mon Oct 06, 2008 1:23 pm

It is very sad...

John Cooper has put up a gallery with historical pictures of Adolf Hitler. He has not taken these pictures...
I left a comment on his gallery and you can see his reply to me...
I think this is rather cynical!
PLEASE DON'T LOOK AT THESE PICTURES
Don't help him to get visibility in the populars by visiting...

John Cooper PM reply 05-Oct-2008 14:05
You are absolutely right Barbara, Adolf Hitler is just about the most offensive person you can imagine.
1,000 views of this gallery to date, and one complaint.
The pictures stay.

barbara heide PM reply 05-Oct-2008 11:04
Feeling deeply offended by this collection ...
I don't think that pbase is the place to publish these pictures...

I hope that my complain will not be the only one!

With all due respect, are we to turn our backs on the lessons of history because some of those lessons are offensive? I'm assuming John has permission to publish the pictures, and if so, then I don't see any issues. 1,000 gallery views is hardly qualifying the gallery as abusing the subject for ratings!

Where does the line get drawn as to what are acceptable pictures and who decides on that acceptability? I can't answer that and I don't think anyone else should try either.

I can see your point...
Would not be pretentious enough to say I have the right
to decide what's offensive or not...
Just my personal feelings...
We are supposed to share "our own" pictures ...

If some people would agree, that they do not want to see pictures of Adilf Hitler on pbase I might recover my confidence in humanity...

I am with Barbara, I saw that gallery yesterday and didn't have any interest in seeing that evil man photos at all. I also felt offended.
This is just my choice and my voice, from the country that suffered a lot. POLAND.

So, no pictures of political figures that you hate, don't like, or that you disagree with. And if you're wanting to ban past figures, I guess that means we should probably exclude present figures as well. So no posting pictures of politicians, or the queen of England, since I'm sure there are people who don't like them.

Nudity is always a hot topic on PBase. Lots of people want that blocked, too. And at least one of the people who have complained about Hitler has nude photos posted. So be aware, you are offending some people with your photos.

I believe David Mingay is less-than-fond of flower pictures. I'm sure there are others. So we should stop allowing pictures of plants and flowers to be posted.

I know plenty of people who get creeped out just looking at pictures of spiders and bees and snakes and such. Let's stop posting all of those, too.

Hmmm, this list is going to get way too long. I have a better idea that is much easier to implement:

If you don't like looking at it, don't look at it.

I don't disagree with peoples dislike of the pictures in question, but would you complain about a book store, a library or a museum with similar content? I doubt it? If the pictures were being posted with a glorification of Hitler, I could appreciate the concern and would agree whole heartedly, but given that the pictures are merely a historical reference, I don't see the insistance on their removal. If the pictures are posted legally then I don't see you have any rights to an objection, with the exception of whether the rights are owned by the poster.

Don't be ridiculous, Scott, flowers didn't send millions of people to the death camps!!
And yes, you're righ, I'm just not looking into this gallery, just left there my word too. We live in free world and whoever wants to look or even vote - it's your choice.

I can understand how some people feel about this, but now the thread is here, surely additional people will now be viewing this gallery and possibly voting for it. Did the aggreived really want that?

In my opinion, it would have been better not to give John's gallery further publicity and restricted this to correspondence to and from him.

I can't agree with those who would censor pbase. America is not about censorship - and while I don't think our Founding Fathers ever imagined some of the things that pass for art these days (and most of you censors would probably support), I'm not going to second guess them and become one of the PC police.

If you don't like the pictures - don't view them. What's next? "Man, I really hate those pictures of <insert what you don't like here>." Then a campaign to eliminate them?

Censorship of this type is not only wrong but dangerous. Don't buy into it. Don't promote it. Don't give in to it.

Period.

America is all about censorship. We censor child pornography, violence, terrorism and many other things. If the majority is disgraced by something it should be removed. There is also the thing called “hate crime” in a “free speech” America.
Having said that, we should remove Adolf Hitler’s sick messages from Pbase also.

I will not view the pictures or have any correspondence with him. period.

This is not censorship but me right NOT to communication with a person that violates everything that I believe in.

And you can qualify everything you believe in based on this discussion!! Personally, I think that demonstrates a lack of beliefs if it can be broken down so simply!!

So you won't go to a book store that sells a biography on Hitler, you won't go to a library that stocks that same book, you won't send your kids to history lessons or go to museums that may have some horrific aspects of history documented!!!! Based on that you really shouldn't be using the internet because there are so many unsavory things out there that may upset you and all your beliefs!!!!!

I tell you what, let's stop documenting life and stick to fluffy bunnies that are so much less likely to cause offense

I am just going to stick my head in the sand and pretend that bad people do not now exist, and never have existed, and that bad things don't happen, and that this topic on this forum is just my imagination as well. While I am at it, I will pretend that women never take their close off, especially for photographers. Some day, I may return to reality, but for now I will remain in La La Land. I do not, however, have any intention of visiting said site or looking at said photos, but it is nothing to get hup about.

Why would anyone want to post photos they did not take themselves?
If anyone wants to see photos of Hitler, all they have to do is google "hitler" images.
There are enough easily accessible photos available. Why put them in your gallery?

Every time I turn on the History channel on our cable TV subscription, there is a story about Hitler.
In the corner of the screen is a big H for history, but my husband and I joke that the H stands for Hitler because of the frequent theme.
We usually change the channel.

Just my two cents.....
