Running PAD Images Through The System Multiple Times

Post Tue Jul 11, 2006 3:59 pm

Not sure how this happens but I noticed that some people are running the same image through the PAD galleries multiple times with the comments still attached from the previous round(s).

Here's an example:
http://www.pbase.com/image/63298377

I had commented on this image last night and now just noticed it on the first page again making it's way through the system for the second time.
Obviously someone has figured out how to beat the system and keep their photo up there indefinitely to pick up more comments and perhaps votes.

Any thoughts on this?

Really less than sporting, in my humble opinion.

For having joined Pbase 2 weeks ago, seems pretty clever, not only as a photograph...

Hope it's clear in English that this post is a sarcasm

At the rate he's been resubmitting the image to the meta gallery
for votes and comments (at least 3 times today), he'll have the top
spot in the populars soon.

Guess he'll sleep better at night.

I'll sleep better knowing I didn't give it a vote.

Yes, this is quite easy to accomplish.

What a sad person!

I didn't click on the link to give him or her yet another 'hit'

I have seen others do the same when I have been around and monitoring the site often. I have posted comments asking how many times they plan to submit today- they just deleted them.

Say, I could do the same thing... get more hits on a photo....more attention...yeah... oh wait, I have a life.

Maybe it's because I am new here or blissfully stupid. But, what exactly is he doing with this picture?

It may be sounds a bit not in line with what you guys saying, and I'm not trying to excuse or justify why someone is trying to outsmart other Pbasers, but here is something to think about.
Even the greatest image has only about a half and hour to be noticed in the PAD supergallery. After that it's pushed to the 6th-10th page and most people browsing PAD even won't get there. Besides, I think most people will browse firstly images of their favorite artists and might not have time to go to see others. So what the chances for some image to be noticed? Very slim. I saw some great images in the PAD that did not have even one comment. Why? I bet not too many people even saw them, since they disapear from the first PAD pages too fast. I'm not talking about the particular image that was mentioned in the first post. That one was noticed. This is about general comment that some images are running several times through the PAD. There might be some rationale behind this. May be the display for the PAD supergallery should be changed and more pictures per page should be displayed or some other idea implemented, to give an image a chance to be noticed.

Michael.

Everyone is in the same boat here.

An image that doesn't get noticed can be reposted again since there
are no rules about that but it just sort of goes against the spirit of
the original intention of PAD to keep switching an image in and out multiple times
to garner more looks and comments (and with it, votes) when
others respect the original PAD doctrine and do it only once.

Imagine if everyone started doing that. We'd be looking at
the same images day and night.

Agree with that, and if you read my post I suggested something that might be done. Couple of years ago, I was looking in the PAD supergallery and seeing same images on the first page for much longer time then today. Probably because much less people was doing the PAD. So having 12 images on the front PAD page gave enough time for people to react and notice them. Today the number of PADers considerably larger and current PAD subgallery setup is not sufficient. I would consider having first page and each other page for at least may be three times more thumbnails. That IMO will give all images better chance.
Besides not everyone in the same boat. Most new PADers have not been entered into others "Favorites" lists, which IMO usually looked up first, before the PAD supergallery is browsed. For example what I do first is to look for the new pictures of my favorite artists and only after that go to the PAD gallery. So before I even take a look into the PAD gallery I spent lot of time commenting on 30-50 of my favorite artists. And I do not have all day and night to browse, so I go may be 5-6 pages of of thumbnails in PAD gallery and comment on some pictures, but there might be hundred pages posted just in one day. I will never come to see them all. I think most people does the same.

Michael.

True Michael, images do flow past rather quickly at specific times of day/night but posting three times the amount of
thumbnails would probably drive away viewers and annoy them with the added necessity of scrolling each page to see all images.

I like commenting on good images whether they be from people I know
or total strangers.
I'll dig as far back as necessary to discover a gem among the fodder.

Sometimes I'll go to my favorites and drop a few comments at once on them to catch up with missing for awhile.

Thanks for the input.
