Infra Red - Who is shooting it?

Post Wed Jun 07, 2006 10:26 pm

Either digital or film. I'll be posting some old stuff I did years ago with film and I'm reworking, but am very interested in shooting some again (digitally) and would like to see what folks are doing:

Here is my attempt at it. All of these images were shot with a Canon S1 IS. I have since moved on to a Rebel XT, however the few attempts at trying to shoot infrared with it have been unsuccessful. Hot spots on some lens and very soft on others. Is anyone out there producing decent infrared images with a Rebel XT? If so, I would appreciate any pearls of wisdom you might have on the subject.

I haven't shot much since switching to the 20d, but I still love the look.
All taken with a 717 and 093 B+W/ND8
The color IR was taken with a red #25.

IR question

Post Mon Jun 12, 2006 12:40 pm

Here's a question I've been wondering about for a long time.

How does one shoot in IR? Is it a filter you add to the lens? Can one shoot normally and then digitally convert an image to an IR image in photoshop? Are there digital filters?

Or does it have nothing to do with filters but a special lens itself? Or maybe even more advanced technology?

Cheers
Karthik

I have only really had success shooting IR on film (Kodak HIE). Some digital cameras can be used with the proper filter to shoot IR. Here is a link to one online source where you can learn more about digital IR.
http://www.echeng.com/photo/infrared/

Here is a set of free actions to use with PhotoShop if you want to try going that route. http://www.thelightsrightstudio.com/TLRFauxInfrared.htm

I have not tried the actions yet, but want to.

Karthik,

While you do need a filter (I have used a Hoya R72) you will also need the right lens. So far I have not found it yet. With some lenses, like the kit lens that comes with the 350D, you get a bright "Hot Spot" in the middle, with other lens, the images were very soft.

Some people, who upgraded to a new camera will have the old camera adapted to shooting only IR by have the mechanism built into most if not all digital cameras that filters out IR removed.

Provided you can get all of this to work, you will probably need a tripod as the exposures can be as high as several seconds. You will also need cooperation from Mother Nature. You will need a very calm but bright and sunny day. Having a few clouds in the sky will help as well.

Hope this helps.

Infrared Photography

Try the Canon 50mm f/1.8 -- a great lens for IR and very inexpensive. A Hoya R72 IR Filter is a good choice as well. Your 300D will require the use of a tripod to get a good shot. You will also need to post-process in Photoshop. I have an IR workflow posted inside my IR gallery if you are interested:

Here's a very useful link to learn about shooting IR. A virtual wealth of info.

This is my first attempt at IR. This was taken with a Nikon D50 and Hoya R72. I took it hand held so it is underexposed. Thanks to Dave for a great tutorial and tips for updating PS elements 2.0 to be more useful.

I'm hooked.

I've been been experimenting with IR using my Canon G6 and Hoya R72 filter! Note a tripod is required most of the time, due to the long shutter speeds needed.

OK, here's some of mine shot with a Nikon D70 and a Hoya R72 filter. The first two used standard procedure; the third was post-processed for effect. See more at:
