Photos for publication -- questions

Post Fri Jun 02, 2006 4:30 pm

How's it going all?

Someone found my pictures on Pbase and wants to publish them. I was wondering how much I should think about getting for them. I don't have any experience with this and I remember seeing here once before where someone shared what kind of compensation to expect for different types of publication.

This is a major name publishing company that has a very well known line of books. They are making a new book in their line and found that some of my pictures are perfect for the book. They also said they need additional photos that they didn't see on my account and were wondering if I could provide.

For photos used in books, should I expect a flat rate payment or some sort of royalties arrangement? Any idea what kind of compensation to expect? I would expect this book to be published in large volume and available in just about every chain bookstore in the U.S. and maybe abroad as well.

Thanks very much for any help,
Jeremy

First of all Jeremy - CONGRATS! and wow, I'm so happy for you.

I can't help with what you should expect in the way of remuneration, but I would suggest you hire a contract lawyer to go over their offer with you so there are no nasty surprises, and you will have a better understanding of what the details really mean.

Cheers

Excellent!

Decide if you would have ever sold the shots as Licensed or Royalty Free images.

Have a look at a stock site like Alamy.com. They provide a calculator for licensed work. For this to work you will need to know the size the images are going to published at and the print run / distribution of the publication.

You will need some legals so the images remain yours and it ties the publisher to the one publication.

Hope that helps a little :)

Thanks to David and vetnurse for their responses. Alamy was a great source of help and, as a matter of fact, I am submitting images there for stock sale. Maybe I'll be able to pull in the industry average for stock photography of $1.00 to $2.00 per image per year.

If you're interested, I negotiated on the book deal and ended up getting $4750 for 26 images. According to the places I looked, that's a pretty fair price for where they'll be using my images and the anticipated print run for the book.

Congrats Jeremy!!

I never thought that was possible. That money would help fund the habit, huh?

Which images, by the way? Can you provide links?

I will divulge some more information once the contract details are sorted and I have submitted all the images. Don't want to screw anything up at this point!

Great news! Well done.

What did you end up using for sources to help you negotiate the pricing on the deal?

Thanks everyone. I feel quite fortunate to have had this happen to me. It was really only because I have sort of a unique couple galleries that popped up when the publisher of the book went out and googled.

Since I have signed the agreement and submitted the images, I'll go ahead and tell what it's for. Wiley Publishing is just finishing a new book in their "For Dummies" series called "Flipping Houses for Dummies". The author is a "very well known real estate professional", but apparently he ain't too good with a camera. So, when they did their googling, my two Flip House galleries came up and the before and after sequences were exactly what they were looking for -- they chose 13 before and after shots from both my galleries -- 26 photos total.

The book is to be published in the next couple months. I will have a photo credit in the book. I am trying to figure out how to convey this into further fame and fortune. I just got my real estate license, so I think maybe I might be able to leverage this experience into my real estate marketing.

We'll see.

The lesson out of this is that if you have any somewhat unique galleries of a place or thing or occupation, etc., make sure you name the gallery so the search engines will find it, and put a bunch of keywords in the gallery description. pbase does a great job of getting your galleries out there on the search engines. My "Old School" gallery gets a few comments a month from people who went to the El Toro Marine School when they were kids because they find my gallery on google.

I've been getting response to my galleries as well via Google.

Last fall I got a weekly magazine cover image when they needed
a specific shot for a deadline and a Chicago advertising firm found
me via another Googling of one of my galleries and hired me to
shoot 3 images for a beer/sports tie-in that paid handsomely.

I'm involved in negotiations now for one of my images that will
end up gracing a label for a herbal product.

Thank you Google and Pbase!
.

Don't be afraid to be different than the pack.
