Did anyone else get one of these?

Post Wed Feb 15, 2006 2:15 pm

Have you ever posted negative commentary? You know the idea of understanding or the evidence of some sort of comparing and contrastiting is a good sign of intelligence. Just because what some people think you do is great, dosen't mean those who are great at what you do, think your great. What I mean is I don't think you take criticism very well. You should actually listen more to those who critisize you and those who praise you. Perfection is only in the eye of envy. I would love to hear what the critics think. Letting others understand your wrong makes your work more real and aesthetically pleasing. Other than the lack of critism you have good pics.

I got two so it sort of looks like a spam. Just curious.

By spam do you mean this person sent it out to a bunch of people or that's computer generated to send to photographer's groups?

or the meat substance.. could it be that? :B

It must have come from an address on pbase.. right?

No meat to it...

No, SPAM as in the stuff sent out to lots of folks.
I have my comments open to non-members, so I have no idea who posted it.

I would just delete it. In my opinion that person is nuts.

"Perfection is only in the eye of envy" - This statement is ludicrous. Envy = A feeling of discontent and resentment aroused by and in conjunction with desire for the possessions or qualities of another.

If anything envy is a total absence of perfection.

If you don't know who sent it, it is meaningless! I agree, spam

...worried about it. Just wondering if this was a person targeting me or spamming.
Hell, I don't even care what I think! :? :? :?

I have not had that exact same post but I have had posts with that "you always delete the negative posts" kind of thing. I tend to think those that make those type of post tend to be just a bit jealous.

Pretty much I just ignore them because it isn't true, oh, and I delete them before they are allowed to go public. I will say moderation has cut hugely down on that type of garbage.

I leave negative, constructive criticism as long as it isn't a personal attack on the subject or myself. "Your photograph sucks because this or that technical or artistic thing could have been better" are always left on, but, "your model is ugly, fat, you name it" are deleted.

The other reality is that I think most poster here tend to be of the "if you don't have something nice to say then don't say anything" type of people. Therefore you don't see much negative criticism here.

I recommend deleting the post and not worrying much about it

When I do leave a constructive criticism, I almost always make it a private comment. Don't know if this is the practice of others, but it could explain why you don't see that many critiques in comments.

I tend to agree with Bill. I think most here use the "say something nice or nothing at all" mentality. My photos either recieve multiple comments (all nice, complimentary or funny) or none at all (which are likely the ones that need critique or I should have deleted :-) ). I think that shows the trend toward compliments. I think the closest I have seen to a real "critique" offering something other just positives were worded with the "nice, although I would have liked to see..." sort of thing.

I like the idea of offering private critique though Bob. Had not thought of that.

I agree that most of the comments do tend to be positive and when I first signed up for pbase, I was hoping there would be more critique.
I've had a few people leave private critique comments and that has been very much appreciated - not so much that they were privately done, but that people whose talents I respect very much have taken the time to make suggestions. I wouldn't mind, frankly, even if these sort of things were left publicly; I know I've learned a lot and gotten ideas from seeing suggestions left for others.

On the other hand, I also admit I tend to leave mainly positive comments. And, maybe some people who do the same are a bit like me - there are so many really excellent photographers here that I find it a bit daunting (even though taking photos is my JOB!) to suggest how they might do something better.

Hehehe, I have had a fair few. Thankfully you can opt to delete them or hide them. I have left most of them where they are and just use them to laugh. I have a series of a beautiful young lady in natural surrounding and someone lectured me on the teachings of the Holy Bible. I responded but in all honesty, it just cracked me up. I too have my galleries accessible to all and anyone can leave a comment. The reason for that is more personal as I like to give my models an opportunity to comment as well. They generally prefer to look at teh comments and critiques.

Any comment, positive or negative, take it with a smile. It just means that someone has opened up the image to have a closer look at it and taken time to express their feelings about it. If the criticism is not related to the image, just hide or delete it. Just remember, it is just one persons opinion. There have been many more who may not have left a message but who will have looked at the image and enjoyed what they saw. Perhaps they even voted.

Rather than delete the negative comments, I prefer to track down the sender and kill them in their sleep.

Much more effective.

I would never be able to do that. The flash always wakes them up as I take their picture right before their demise ;-)

I usually only leave constructive comments in a private message, but I also don't usually leave that unless someone has asked for such feedback. I never know when looking at some sites if they just put pictures up for Aunt Mable and the family and could care less about their photography tecnhnique or someone trying to improve their photography. If their profile requests it or I go from a forum that requests it, I may leave something constructive but if they haven't asked, I usually would not do so.

I do that as well.
