Dealing with anonymous comments

Post Fri Feb 03, 2006 3:55 am

How does everyone deal with inappropriate comments posted to their PAD, or any other galleries? I had mine set to where I must approve all comments before anyone else could see them because of some nasty ones in the past. However, I received a really inappropriate comment tonight and I am frustrated beyond all belief since the person did not leave an email address so I could respond to him personally. No one but me saw the comment, but it still takes the wind out of my enthusiam for shaing my work on Pbase. What to you guys do when you get stuff like that?

I did delete, but it is hard to ignore a direct ad hominem attack. I'm really starting to lose my enthusiam here.

Don't lose what you have going on because of some loser that is too afraid to expose their real identity.

This recently happened to me on one of my galleries and I just allow the post to stay. After all, I am no better or worse after the SINGLE comment made than I was before it.

The good outweigh the bad...

One of the unfortunate aspects of the internet is trolls. The annonymity and unlimited access allows for all those maldeveloped 14 year old boys, or those who never developed past the mentality of the same, to pop in and leave what are intended to be unsettling comments on anyone's site or galleries. It's the same mentality that makes them think farting and saying the f- word is cool. Their only intent is to disturb people.

I wouldn't bother to respond to them even if they left an email address. The best response is to simply, without fanfare, make them and their comments go away. Deny them what they want: attention. Trying to engage simply tells them they found someone they can play with.

One of my good friends here, Audra, has removed all her galleries for just such a reason.

She has been hounded by "guest" for some time and decided to pack it in rather than suffer inappropriate comments that attacked her and her work on an almost daily basis.
It's too bad that there are people out there that don't have a life and need to insult others anonymously to get their kicks.

It's our loss here because Audra is a rising star with her photography and a beautiful person inside and out.

She is of course human and rude comments just drove her away from Pbase. She still loves all her friends here though and misses the commentary on her work.

I have been thinking about this all day, so thanks for all the comments so far. I have protected a few galleries and moved some stuff around so it doesn't get negative attention. I did a google search on the name the poster left (no email of course) and they used a famous photographer's name, whom I doubt would have the time or interest to accuse me of basically being a pedophile for taking pictures of my nieces. I am trying to just ignore it for now.

That is an extreme and unecessary response to a troll. One can simply not allow nonmembers to post comments. And since there have been a few members who seem to lack any sense of courtesy or respect, the site has set up the ability to block the comments of specific members as well.

And bob, if some annonymous-by-choice individual wants to make such an accusation I would submit it says more about where his head is at than about your work.

Happened to me, too. I ended up removing whole galleries of pictures to reduce the explicit attention from hormone crazed anonymous loners. That being said, the best step I took was disallowing anonymous posts from showing. After awhile they discovered their posts weren't visible, and I wasn't reacting, and all of them went away within 3 weeks.

Thanks for the support Jeff. I think your shots of your wife are always tastefully done. I have just turned off all comments to non-Pbase users so they won't show up at all. I did have it set where I had to approve anonymous posts, but my niece logs in as me to check her hit counts and I am very fearful she will see a negative comment about herself. She isn't old enough to let them not effect her, and thats what upset me the most, because she DID see the comment yesterday.

I've gotten my share of anonymous losers too but I have a thicker skin and a fast trigger hand.

I visited your site- photos look good to me. Don't let anyone run you off.

I had just "found" Audra's page before she made all of it private because of the nutcase(s). I think it is sad. I wish she would just block non members from commenting.

As some have said, it's just maladjusted with nothing more constructive to do. Delete, move on, nothing to see here, folks.

Much thanks to everyone for all the feedback. I initially went in and locked everything down where nobody but pbase subscribers could post. Then I though, "I'm NOT going to let some anonymous loser persuade me from doing what I have been doing." I put everything back the way it was, and unregistered posters comments have to be approved, but I think I can trust you guys. Screw you, mister anonymous poster!
