How many photos do you shoot...

Post Thu Feb 02, 2006 4:01 pm

I have been thinking about this for a couple of days and am curious so decided to ask, how many photos do you typically shoot to get your PAD? Is it a "one and done" type thing? Do you shoot 50 frames and take the best?

Not related

Post Thu Feb 02, 2006 5:26 pm

My number of shots has never been related to PAD. I shoot as many shots as I need to cover the subject or subjects that I am shooting on that day.
From those shots, I pick my PaD. In other words...I'm shooting to shoot, not to get a shot for PaD.

As an example, my shot on February 1 was number 42364 and the next day's 42458. I know that 42364 was virtually the last shot I made yesterday, and todays shot using only a fridge for light took quite a bit of trial and error.

But its not unusual for me to take 40-80 shots when in low light!

With each subject it varies. When I shoot with film I try and be picky about how many shots I take and what I take it of. With digital it is different. I like to take as many shots as I can to get varied views of the subject. With portraits I have been known to take up to 60 shots in one sitting that lasts less than an hour. With portraits I also like to take that many because of capturing various expressions and changing mood. It also depends on the subject and light and so on. With good light I will shoot much more. Most of my portraits are done in a relaxed setting. I like to chat with the person I photograph. It sets them at ease and they forget about the camera.

With landscapes I try to do at least two or three in the same spot on various settings.

On most weekends I shoot over a 100 to 200 photos and cut that I half before I download them. Then after viewing them I cut that down to at least another half and then I finally look at then in PS or whatever program I am using. After that it goes down to about maybe ten shots out of the 100 to 200 photos that I take on a weekend. Throughout the week I tend to get frustrated with a shot and delete it. Over all there are probably 4 to 5 shots that I like out of a weekend and maybe 1 that I will keep to print.

I also shoot sporadically throughout the week but that is anywhere between 20 to 50 shots for the week and those are weeded down as well.

I don’t generally shoot just for PAD. I shoot what I like. About the only time I do that is for the Friday SP and that can change as well. It depends on my mood.

I tend to shoot about 10 if I am just shooting for a PAD and pick the best, other days I shoot what I see if I see anything interesting...

I tend to just shoot photos in the course of the day and at the end, pick something to put on. Sometimes something will come to mind I will shoot with a purpose in mind for PAD.

If I am sick or something happens where I can't get out, I try to pick a photo from the last 72 hours. I could shoot a picture of my shoe, computer screen, etc, or something, but would not see any benefit in that unless I honestly thought there was a picture in it. I think the purpose of PAD seems to be to keep shooting and to keep fresh work coming, and I think staying in a 72 hour time frame generally keeps to that if I just can't get out to do anything else.

2 to 200

I shoot at least 2.. but sometimes more... depends if I'm in the mood, how much time I can make and what the subject is.

So one day I only have 2 the others maybe 50 to 200 photos to choose from.

I shoot anywhere from 5 (busy, bad light, etc.) to 75 (great light, location, time, etc.) shots per day.

I shoot as many as possible... for work, say a basketball game, I take upwards to 200 pics.. For just myself I take at least 2 or 3 per each perspective of what I want to shoot.. different compositions..

For clients I do the same thing.. about 3 to 4 photos for every pose..

Sometimes cars come along on a busy, snowy road and I only take one for fear of my life :S

Wow, it must be a holdover from my film days when each shot cost money- I rarely shoot a lot of photos of a single event. I just checked and the last two assignments I had;

An awards ceremony that I shot 11 pics
A lunchoen event that I shot 9 pics

We had a nice snow today, so I thought I would go out and shoot a specific shot of a bridge and pond in the snow for PAD and I shot 6 exposures.

Some things that are long and with a lot of different activitres I have shot more, but rarely over a 100 shots in a day of a particular event. I did count and found I shot 28 pics during a Scout meeting last week but I was working under difficult lighting and its hard to get their hands working on a project just right.

I will experiment with different lighting or set ups at time and shoot some more, but usually still only 30-40 shots. I know a would often go out and shoot a 100 or so pictures of B&W and run back to the darkroom to see how they turned out while the shots were still fresh in my mind in the early days. I do remember a photographer in art school that had won a lot of awards and he always had two cameras with him all the time (this was pre-digital)- one loaded B&W and one loaded color and he was always shooting.

After so long, if you are shooting pictures for other people, you learn pretty much what they are going to select. I am going to have to knock down whatever I turn in anyway- there is no way an editor wants to go though 150 images- they want to choose from 5-10 at the most.

I think it is great people are experimenting and shooting a lot. It would probably be good if I diid more- Lord knows I still need the practice. I just get bored with single subject/event after so long.

It all depends on the time, subject, lighting, ideas and such. I don't have a lot of experience at the PAD theme, but so far I have shot three and sixty and everything in between.

I don't shoot for a PAD, I just shoot whatever I like. Typically on an outing I will shoot 100 photos. I may even shoot 60 in my yard if I'm trying to learn a new technique.

shoot mooore :)

yep, it's crazy - i can shoot the whole 1 Gb card out (in RAW format though, only); and then i leave maybe 1-6 photos.

the thing is that i'm too picky about dull photos, so i try not to have photos that me or anyone else would think it's dull. i don't shoot photos just for sake of adding them to may galleries. i shoot for joy and pleasure. if it takes a whole week for implementing one idea - well that's the way it is then!

for example the last week i deleted about 200 photos just because i woke up once and they seemed boring to me. so if i thought about it before, i wouldn't have to loose time on uploading them!

i think that's the main problem with people on pbase - most f them just through everything they shoot on the site - and most of the stuff is boring!

so what i'm saying is - of course shoot as much as you can - but leave the best! :)

p.s. sorry for changing the subject a bit :)
