How do you manage your PaD gallery ?

Post Mon Dec 26, 2005 12:59 pm

Hello,

I plan to start a PaD gallery on the 1st of january 2006.
But I wonder if I will be able to do one shot every day.
I have to leave very early in the morning to go to work, and I often come back late home... nevertheless, I want to try !!

Would you have some advices about that ?
How do you manage your PaD gallery with your professionnal life, your family, the housekeeping, etc ??

Another question. Anybody join me in beginning her/his PaD gallery on the 1st january?? :D

I think if you ask many that have done a year +, they will tell you it becomes a part of their way of life. I had times during my year that things went easy, and others that I actually had to turn to others for inspiration.

The year went by real quick...

Hi Natasha,

I asked the same question when I started, and back then I worked between 9 to 5, including the dark winter months.

Maybe it is possible to snatch a shot at lunchtime?

Another idea is to photograph a home object with an ordinary spotlight.

Don't forget that it is sometimes possible to make interesting night shots.

Have a go!

Good luck as you start your new year in January!
I did PAD without missing a day for about 16 months, after which I took about a week's "rest". Now I post most days but not all.

I wondered the same thing when I started.. and it DOES become part of your life (sometimes an obsession, shall we say ...lol)... but take pics on your way to work, on your way home.. in the house.. Sometimes I took a pic of my supper! But just take the challenge.

I picked up a camera 4 months before joining Pbase, which is coming up to 2 years in February. For all it's "glitches" this site afforded me a chance to explore photography.. and it has taken over my life. Doing PAD taught me what I needed to know.. what to look for.. other's style that I appreciated... things I did that I DIDN'T like, etc. About a year later I landed a job as a newspaper photographer..

But better than that - I finally found what I was looking for (as Bono says).. Finally found what I was meant to do..

Again, good luck.. :D

I will join you when I start Year 2 on January 1st.

Natasha, there have been volumes written on this very subject. My take on it is that the fewer rules you attach to this, the more you will enjoy it. Happy PADing.

There is a weekly thread where we post the best picture of the week. I hope to see yours in there.

I post what I feel like whether it was taken that day or not. It's a photo a day either way.

Do others really care if every image was taken on a certain day? I doubt it. If the photo is interesting I don't care if it was taken 20 years ago, I enjoy seeing it for the first time here.

Try to confound the viewer at times. Don't just leave a trail of stale images day by day. Think deeper when looking through the viewfinder and challenge the viewer with unusual angles, image, mystery and words. Yeah...words.
Titles can make an image take on another meaning or help explain what your subject is all about or make them think about it.

Anyone can take a photo a day but it's the good photographer who can grab a viewer's eye and hold it on a consistant basis.

Think outside the box!
.

Don't be afraid to be different than the pack.

I started my PAD a couple of weeks after I bought my camera, 6 months ago.

I started shooting everyday and was very worry about what I would have to post... is it interesting? yes? no? blablabla...
Then I started to do it more for myself and stopped worrying.
Now, I don't think too much about what I am going to shoot and most the time there is something that comes to me... if not, I make it happen.
For example get out of the bus another stop than I should, I walk one street further... or I just shoot things that are around me.
The main thing is when you see something that might be interesting, STOP and SHOOT it! Make the effort to take your camera out and shoot, it worth it! I ALWAYS have my camera with me wherever I go.

The main reason for starting this project was to force myself to use my camera, learn how to use it and experiment things.
Only after few months taking photos everyday, I descovered the real benefit I got out of it. It does make my eyes, my heart and my brain work... and if someone likes my photos, it makes me very happy and that's a great bonus.

The other advantage for me of taking a photo each day is that there are many photos (if not most of them) I would never have taken if it wasn't for the PAD... It is a hard work some days and it's true that I have some boring shots but at least I tried something...

To finish, I would say that I learnt so much from the other Padders wathever their ways of padding.

Those are only MY reasons and my way to do it... and I really enjoy it this way!

I don't think there is any right or wrong way to do a PAD,
The only good way is to enjoy it whatever your aims, your reasons or how you do it...

Enjoy snapping and Welcome! :)

Kim

A few other points to keep in mind.

You will find that as you take your camera out each day, you will see more opportunities than you first imagined. Even the most apparently mundane subject can be transformed into a good photo.

For example, I was out today and noticed an empty shop on the outskirts of town with the low winter sun shining in to it. Of course, pre PAD I would have not given this a second look, but my shadows and that of the window frame looked really cool!

Then I saw shoppers walking by a bright red background. Again, unless you are carrying your camera about all the time, you just don't "see" these opportunities as you are only focussing on going shopping!

As you go about, you will spot all sorts of things, maybe detail on a wall which you can shoot another day. There will also be subjects that will always look better in different lighting conditions, so save them up for another day. I have had a mental library of certain subjects, as well as locations where there maybe many potential shots (for example a run down building).

Maybe I've wittered on enough...

Don't be afraid to experiment!

Not sure I can talk with authority since I just started but after a week it has occured to me a PaD should be about what you want. I find myself taking a photo of something I might have a better shot of in the past and at times want to post the better older shot to show my best but my PaD is not a showcase of my best work. For me my PaD is about taking photos everyday to push myself under different conditions. In the end if I learn something on a given day when conditions are not perfect for the shot it is better than showing one of my better shots which were to some extent luck.
It is important to try and shoot everyday but if you miss one because of commitments now and again then post something else and explain why you did it or not at all. It is your PaD for you to grow as others have said.

Have fun and learn or else why PaD.

PaD keeps me motivated to take more photos. I'm already thinking about what I might post tomorrow! I think the idea is to take a photo every day and post it, not go back through your archives and pull one out that was taken last month, or whatever. That would be TOO EASY! The challenge of taking a photo every single day is what makes it so much fun, after all.

I'm glad someone asked the question as I am also starting a PAD on 1 January 2006 - how many shots can I take on the way to & from my children's school every day?!

V useful information given, now I'm looking forward to starting my year's project! :D

Just to put another point of view, I would find it impossible to take, process and post a new photo each day. I work at home on a PC approx 11 hours a day, and if I go out to a business meeting I'm generally on the mobile phone in the car and late!

Unlike some of the real PAD experts, I can't take decent pictures when I'm full of work stress. So I mostly tend to take my weeks pictures at the weekend - not always but mostly.

Even this has stretched me, and I still feel I have gained so much from PBase generally and PAD in particular. And it's so enjoyable to be out with the camera, but with that creative pressure of taking my PADs.

My over-riding aims have been to provide a picture of reasonable quality or interest each day, and to create a body of work I can look back on with some satisfaction. I think I keep to the spirit of PAD by not posting any picture that has been taken more than 7 days previous.

Jude just hit the nail on the head for me. If you need inspiration for the benefits to someone who seriously seeks to better their craft, visit Judes galleries. I personally had no idea Jude had only been shooting a couple of years. Blow me away

Anyway... if you seek it, this daily journey will reveal truths to you, make you look at things differently, connect you to the beauty and mystery around you and will speed up the turning of calendar pages

Welcome aboard!
