Could I have opinions on the photographic merit of this photo, please?

I think it is an excellent picture. I see a lot of emotion in the face of your subject. I think the picture would benifit from darkening and further blurring everything but the face of this guy in Photoshop or Paintshop of something.

I agree with Mark. The left of the image seems a little distracting. Maybe if it was darkened a tad. Interesting facial characteristics on the subject.
I love photoshopography.......

Nice lighting, a bit noisy. Background gives a good environmental feeling, crop a bit from the right and burn and blur a bit on the left, boost up the contrast and saturation on his face, can be made into a stunner.

What I find intriguing in this photo?
The fact that he is in eye-contact with your lens, and not with your eyes.

The merits of the photo are, at least in part, dependent on what
you're trying to communicate. Which then begs the question:
what are you trying to communicate? Or put another way,
why did you take this photo? What are you trying to show
us?

Underlying each image you make should be this message:
"Here's something that interests me, something I want to
share with you."

So what caught your interest here and prompted you to
make this shot?

Answer those questions and then it will be easier to talk about
what works about the shot, and what things you might consider
when next you go shooting.
