Word of the day

Post Tue Jun 21, 2005 9:58 am

I noticed that the site http://thesaurus.reference.com/ has a word of the day. Today's word (for example) is irascible (prone to anger). Anyone else up to the challenge of taking a photograph that fits that word - perhaps not every day, but at least one day a week? Any ideas, suggestions?

Good idea; if only my English was not so poor...
Pad is already a challenge by itself so a weekly basis would fit.
Well, let's think about it, once a week, maybe :)

Hi Nicolas,
I wish my French was as poor as your English!!! Come to think of it, I wish my Portuguese was as poor as your English :)

Stu, maybe only on "easy days"! I'm subscribed to two of that word-a-day lists and have made it the inspiration for a few PAD shots (just didn't mention it then, and can't remember which now!)...

From the Wordsmith list today:
dissemble (di-SEM-buhl) verb tr., intr.

To hide true feelings, motives, or the facts.

[By alteration of Middle English dissimulen, from Latin dissimulare,
from simulare, from similis (similar).]

From The Devil's Dictionary:
Dissemble, v.i. To put a clean shirt upon the character.

Today's word in Visual Thesaurus: http://visualthesaurus.com/?w1=dissemble

"So when should you be honest and when should you dissemble? 'You don't
want to trick them and tell them later about the onions in the soup
because they'll learn not to trust you,' advises Chambliss."
Barbara Rowley; 7 Rules For a Peaceful Home; Parenting (San Francisco);
Dec 2001/Jan 2002.

This week's theme: words from The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce.

That's an interesting one!

Good stuff Della, looks like a challenge, I'd like to try it.

Found some interesting photos  of someone named Della on his site.

Ok, I started, for better or for worse, with today's dictionary.com word of the day, voluble. My photo uses a rather obscure botanical alternate definition. Click on the link to see the definition.

Third day and all's well.

Okay, so far I've done three: irascible, ineluctable and voluble. I don't know how many have joined me - perhaps if you have started, you could leave a note here. I know that 'Jeremy Good' is on board, as is Petesie. I also know that Linda Alstead has been trying to incorporate the word of the day in her daily diary - and that she has been doing it for a while now. Apart from these, I am in the dark.

Here are my three so far:
IRASCIBLE

INELUCTABLE

VOLUBLE

Let's see yours now!

Sounds difficult but may give it a try. When looking at the link provided and the words you have done my thoughts were "Must be in a different language, one I'm not familiar with", I don't know any of these words.
