How To Comment On A Boring Photo:

Post Tue May 24, 2005 4:50 pm

1. Look closely at the image you're about to comment on and find a redeeming feature.

2. If there are no redeeming features, make fun of the subject matter.

3. Comment on the PAD poster's grammatical mistakes.

4. Leave a link to your recent photo(s).

5. Put your best cliche in the box, like, "nice ---", "great ---", "cool ---"
"good ---", "lovely ---" and "pretty ---". Adjectives work best.

6. Suggest how the person can improve his or her photographs, possibly
by taking up a new hobby, like mountain climbing in the Arctic Range.

7. Comment on the framing.

8. Leave a short story about how your day went.

9. Leave an emoticon.

10. Cut and paste from the person above or below.

11. Make it in French, German, Spanish or perhaps an African dialect. No
one will be the wiser, especially the person who's image it's posted under.

12. Suggest improvements like cropping 100% of the image.

Now get out there and comment. A boring photo awaits your reply.

I think tomorrow I'm going to test this out - I'm gonna take a photo of my black piece of velvet.

Of all the pictures I've seen on Pbase, I think I can say, without exageration, that this one is by far the most recent one, and I mean that with the greatest of sincerity.

Here's a few:

"What can I say?"

"Wow!"

"This is the best overexposed out of focus flower macro I've seen today!"

and my favorite:

"VOTED!"

Well, if some people have a knack of posting photos and getting comments and votes on the most boring photos, English lomo photographer Martin Parr has gone one stage further - he makes a living out of it!

One of his portfolios is all about the "last car parking space" - that's right a series of pictures of tarmac. Another is a survey of Boring, Oregon - this portfolio illustrates a number of signs from this quiet town - one at the local water treatment facility is shown on
<A HREF="http://www.deichtorhallen.de/ausstellungen/MartinParrEngl.htm" TARGET=_blank>this web page</A>

Way to go folks!

Ray

PS: some of Martin's work is actually quite funny.....

I comment less and less....

Post Wed May 25, 2005 10:14 pm

...sadly, I'm less motivated than ever to comment.
At times I go back over a page of the popular gallery and ask myself why I did not look at or comment on this image or that. I often don't have an answer. Perfectly good images that might merit a comment get passed by.
Ok, I think I know what it is...PaD has gotten so darn big! 18 months ago it was a hundred people.
Anyone remember the "who's shot is that anyway" challenges I used to put on? Can you imagine trying that with this huge crowd?

I think we're getting off-topic here....

I'm almost interested!
Must be all those Emoticons blinking back at me.

Maybe we need shorthand for comments.

gc = good composition
ts = tack sharp
nbw = nice b&w treatment
nt = nice tones
nc = nice colors
ge = good eye
nf = nice find
bs = either beautiful sunrise or beautiful sunset
bfm = beautiful flower macro
bim = beautiful insect macro
gp = great portrait
nsp = nice self portrait
nsp! = nice self portrait Jude
eps = excellent Photoshop work
eps! = excellent Photoshop work Robin
ha = humorous comment

I think that about covers it. This should shorten commenting time significantly. All those in favor say "a".
