What moves you to vote...

Post Mon May 02, 2005 5:26 pm

I have been around Pbase for a little over a year now and am wondering what about a picture moves people to vote for it?

As someone who always votes for an image that I enjoy, I am wondering what moves the other P.A.D.ers out there to vote.

If you don't vote, why?

I vote.. and I do it for the ones that really have some unusual spark and creativity.. or ones I find beautiful or deadly sad.. I guess I'm saying ones that evoke some emotion in me.

Seems to me people are voting more these days..

I rarely vote

Because votes don't really mean much. "Popular" photography doesn't necessarily mean GOOD photography. If I think a photo is actually good I tell the photographer and maybe I'll vote.
For me, the comments and page views tell more than votes.

What is the purpose of the vote? Is there a section for pictures/galleries that receive votes? How do you learn what the results are?

Yes, Camms

You can vote for either a photo or a whole gallery.

If you click on Popular Galleries at the top of the page, you'll see the galleries that have been voted for - this defaults to the votes cast of the past 7 days but you will see on the right there are other options.

You'll notice on that page that you can switch to Most Popular Photos which works similarly - this also shows how many votes have been cast for each photo.

I've been trying to vote more recently - generally on photos that stand out from the crowd. This can be either artistically or technically but it has to grab me in some way.

In addition to the obvious, like technical skills, composition, creativity and so on, I like to pick out some images that have been neglected every so often.

I seldom vote for cheap shots, even though I'm sometimes curious....

I like the idea of voting and it would be nice if this feature was more widely used. Sure, comments are the most useful to the photographer, but votes allow good work to be highlighted in the popular galleries for others to discover and learn from.

And from the photographers point of view, a vote is more valuable than just the hits score which may only mean someone was intrigued by the thumbnail but was disappointed with the full image.

I really really wish there was a way of knowing how many votes a photo had (without trawling through 80 pages of more popular photos first)

I really do agree with Fran (jenga) here. Often we'll have a photo that has one vote and it is therefore way down the queue, buried on page 265 on the most popular galleries.

That trawl is time consuming, but its always worth looking through it to find some good work.

Incidentally, the voting has improved a lot from a year ago, but there is still room for improvement, especially for indivdual photos.

Go figure...my shot of a mere pimple from less than twenty-four hrs ago already has 78 hits and my shot of a pretty dog only has 34 in almost 3 weeks...that strange, strange hits logic...

I vote when I see a shot that I like and provokes some thought, and think that others should see too. Perhaps the name "Popular" is rather unfortunate, I would rather call it "Interesting" or "Thought provoking".

Breasts...

...I vote for breasts, oh yea and ass.

Ok, well, sometimes I do vote for those things, but there is usually some very obvious merit to the shot other than the subject's bod.

I am, at times, disapointed at the lack of votes for my images. When I feel that way, I sometimes blame it on the fact that I have no naked women pictures.
I have to blame it on something after all.

here's a photo I voted for...

Post Sat May 21, 2005 4:35 pm

Image
in this gentleman's gallery of "misc" photos; it appeared in the PAD today...
http://www.pbase.com/rysio

and, here's why I voted for it:
color on color well executed
composition is SUPERB
yellow is maybe the hardest color to do without lots of overblown areas

I hope the guy doesn't have a problem with my post of his photo..
