Zoom with your feet week.

Post Thu Apr 21, 2005 10:56 pm

We used to get themes going around here pretty easily, but I haven’t seen anything for awhile. So here’s another try.
I’m proposing a “Zoom with your feet week.â€

Exactly one year ago I zoomed off some steps with my feet and broke my ankle so I'll sit this one out. I've learned never to walk backwards with my face stuck in the camera, after this mishap.

I'd like to add that the management is not responsible for accidents caused by absent minded photographers wandering about with their heads disconnected from their feet.

Thank you.

Jude,
It just means that you would take all of your shots at 18mm, or 55mm, or 50mm, or any other single focal length that you wish.
The idea is to force you to look at things differently instead of using your equipement to get what you already have in mind.
For instance...
You know my usual style with flowers and plants and such is to get right up on them and issolate my main subject.
Example:

Yesterday, I took only 1 lens with me, an old 85mm manual focus. This meant I had to find some other way to generate interest. That lens just will not close focus. So, this is what I came up with:
Image

Better? I don't know. But, certainly different for me.

The 2 ways of zooming are not equivalent.

When you zoom with your lens you only crop the image like in Photoshop, and the perspective remains the same.

When you zoom with your feet you change the perspective, that means the image.
In fact you risk your life. Serious photographeres like Anna do that.

Hope helps.

so, why not call it "one focal length" or "one lens week" or something like that and folks could choose to say what they did to make the photo.
I like your whole view of the cholla (or whatever that cactus is).

Would it mean no cropping in Photoshop?

Crop

I wouldn't say no croping.
I try never to crop past the point that I could get an 8x10 at 175 dpi. Otherwise, nothing I do would have relevance on paper and it would all be about the computer.
That's just me though.

I don't like too many rules. One focal length is enough to force you to do, and see differently. That's the point of the excercise after all.

I suppose this means another week where I try to stack the camera database's sample photo section with my shots with either the 35 f/2 or 100 f/2...

I like the theme idea though.

Okay.. so does this mean we choose one focal length for the WEEK? or we use one focal length a day? (i'm making this very difficult, aren't I?)...

are you getting irritated yet, Steven? LOL

and when do we start?

I'm just pleased you haven't asked me to define "focal length."

I was thinking of picking a single focal length and sticking to it for a week. That's 7 days...in a row.
For example:
Day 1 = 85mm
Day 2 = 85mm
Day 3 = 85mm
Day 4 = 85mm
Day 5 = 85mm
Day 6 = 85mm
Day 7 = 85mm
Day 8 = Anything you damn well please.

Of course, I'm not not sure of the start date. I'm going to spend from the 1st to the 6th of May in a Hotel in Dallas without any wheels. I'm not sure I can add another restriction to that and still get a shot taken.

If I try to hold this off till May 9th, will I be letting this idea die of old age?
