I feel if a person says that they do not want their photo taken then that should be respected as long as you are not taking the photo for journalism and documentary purposes. Private property is different. A business has the right not to allow photos being taken on their property. That is as long as it is not for journalism.

I think it depends on the country you're in. Here in Belgium, you can take photographs of anything you want.

It happened in Hong Kong too ... I was told not to taking pics in Shopping Malls and Starbucks.
