Digital SRL slowing your PoD efforts?

Post Sun Aug 21, 2005 3:38 pm

I've been doing a PoD for about a year now (before I joined PBase). All my PoD images were taken with a Olympus C5050. Even tough I am very happy with this camera, I wanted:
-Instant start up (The C5050 takes about 3-4 seconds to start up)
-No shutter lag
-Ability to take RAW pictures (The C5050 takes RAW, but almost no software supports Olympus RAW format ORF)

So, about 3 months ago I bought a Canon 20D. But now I'm finding out that I am not taking as much pictures as before. I'm finding out that I am not carrying the 20D to all places like I did with the C5050. It is bulkier and as soon as I take it out of its bag...all people around notice and I feel like everybody is watching.

Has any one experienced a slowing PoD due to switching to a DSLR?

Here is the 20D PoD so far:

I am just the opposite. I replaced my "SLR" Rebel with the Rebel XT and bought a top loading bag from m-rock. I can fit the XT with the 100mm f/2.8 Macro with room for the strap & some little things.

I've been taking this with me to work every day as it is pretty compact. I have a Tamrac backpack that can hold my flash, lens, and other accessories, but it was too bulky.

Since buying the XT, I've been able to start and maintain my PaD (though I better get cracking on today's, another long day of construction work).

I've seen the 20D, but didn't have my XT to compare it to. You might want to take a peek at a smaller bag and/or the XT.

I pretty much carry my 1D MarkII with me everywhere. Ocassionally I slip my A80 in when I can't take the SLR. No problems on my end. I enjoy the far less limited SLR over the P&S.

I have a very big handbag!! I take my D70 everywhere with me although I have just bought a bag especially for it so it doesn't get too knocked about in my handbag. I also still have my coolpix and use that fairly often, so am not finding it a problem...plus getting the DSLR really re-whetted my flagging appetite for PaD. Maybe you just need to experiment a bit to see what's going to work best for you?

Good luck :)

Must admit with my D70 I always think I am about to get mugged when I get it out the bag!

Better bag...

Humm...it seems that the trick may be in getting the right bag.
The back-pack that I'm currently using is too big.
Thx for the suggestions!

Heh~ Steve, the D70 is so big compared with the old coolpix I used to carry everywhere that when I pull it out I think I could mug someone WITH it! :P

Steve... I've found that a good monopod with an old TP lens attached is pretty intimidating to would be muggers

I carry a Digital Rebel with one small lens over my shoulder
and never have a problem.

Screw the bag and backpack! If god wanted us to carry that
much crap he would have given us a pouch like kangaroo moms
for their joeys.

Simplicity works marvelously.

mmmm

one alternative would be to send me your dslr gear and buy a small digital :)
Happy to help!
