There are certainly some drawbacks to stock photography, but I suppose it depends on what you tend to photograph.

For one thing, candids are out as I don't have a model release for any of these 'victims' and then there are other shots that show logos that are also banned :-(

Earlier this year, I entered the DPC challenge on Stock Photography and submitted what I considered a great photo of an urban street dancer. Many said they marked it down as it was not really a stock type photograph and questioned what it could promote.

Yes, desite of what everyone says, stock photography is very specific, good sellers are business photos and photos with open space near subject are good too.

As I said in an earlier post, I work as a reviewer. Clickaway, let's just say you got a model release for the guy in the pic, all you have to do is just blur or clone out the logo etc.

As to the pic itself, it's not evident what the guy is doing. Pics that do well are those which are posed, good lighting and sharp.

A lot of people just submit flowers, sunsets, even ununexpected people of their backs. (Watch out, it's not safe anymore if you see someone with a camera anywhere! hahah) You can submit and might be approved but it just won't sell. And lots of people are lazy with keywords. A stock photo company can do all the advertisement re their pictures but ultimately, it's your keywords which are important. And I don't mean keywords spamming.

If anyone here would like to start earning some extra pocket money, one example of what people or companies will want to buy is to look at the pictures/frame department at IKEA. :) See the quality, the lighting, the subject. Start from there and you will soon see what the demand of particular pics are.

Not to brag or sound snooty or anything but you are selling yourself WAY short! I have sold more than a few images lately and I have to say the rates your selling at just give the work away.

For instance just ONE image I sold for useage as a travel guide cover with a 1 year lease was $950 and that is considered to be a LOW price. Selling an image for $0.20 is just crazy! That would be 4750 downloads!

Not only that but when more and more peope sell at .20 that makes the industry rate sink like a stone...

:) Can you sell any of my images for such ammout? if yes, please do and I will give you 20% of each sale.. seriously.

Don't agree with you about sinking the industry, I do not see Times Magazine shopping around for 20cent images for cover :) nor I see a start out designer shelling out 950 for an image.... the industry in my opinion has more then enough room for both.
