A question for Pad'ers...

Post Sat Apr 23, 2005 5:38 am

Hi, I am new to this, (3 days in), and just noticed that my most recent image, once converted to .JPG and compressed from a 5.5 MB Nikon .NEF files, but still 1Mb even after compression, looks drab in comparison to the original image.

The colors are washed out and the sharpness is dulled and the light is even a little less crisp.

Is there a way to correct this or is that inevitable when you go from a .NEF file to a compressed .JPG?

Any hints/suggestions/comments?

Thanks!

From looking at the photos in original size, I think some of the problem stems from how much compression you're using on the JPGs--that's creating some artifacts that are particularly noticeable in the gray areas of your Hollywood mural photo, for example.
You might also resize the photos yourself before uploading, to under 1000 pixels per side. PBase tends to be a bit rough resizing on its own.
As far as the colors looking washed out overall, they do look like they could use a bit of perking up for contrast.
If you're viewing them in a different color space in Nikon Capture, things might not look as good when you put them up with a web browser.

You were exactly right, unexplained_bacon.

They were too big, so I downsized and used better compression to get the same file size.

Thanks a lot!
