Explain What 100% and other Crop Means Please. Need Answers.

This isn't a Pbase issue, but a Photo issue. I recently posted this photo
http://www.pbase.com/image/40727804, and someone said "nice crop". What does that mean? I didn't crop it in any editing thing...I have a 70-300mm zoom lens and it allows me to get *this* close to things...
Also what does 50% crop mean, or 100% crop? I'm sorry, but I don't really cut out much from my photos...I post them as I take them as far as the size of things go, I have zoom and macro lense so I don't really find a need to shorten the photo? Anyway can someone please expalin what that is.

Cropping can turn a mediochre image into a striking one.

Cropping is cutting out the area you don't want in your image, in order to better show the area you do want. It can be done in an editing programme, or better still, by carefully composing the area you wish to keep by framing your subject carefully. With a long lens you are better able to do this, and it's the preferred method as you do not lose any of those precious pixels.

A 100% crop means that an image just part of a larger image at the size it actually is.

For instance, I have a photo of some seed pods. http://www.pbase.com/darter02/image/36110841

It is a full framed image that has been sized down from the original to 720 pixles high.

I want to show you some of the actual detail. I take the orginal, full-sized image and use a crop tool to nip out part. I then upload that part with out resizing it in anyway. http://www.pbase.com/darter02/image/36110209

That is a 100% crop... at least as I understand that term.

A 100% crop is when you crop a part of the image, when it's zoomed in to 100% and resolution is adjusted accordingly. A 100% crop has to be zoomed in to 100% and resized.

A 75% crop is when you crop a part of an image, when it's zommed to 75%, resized, and resolution is adjusted accordingly.

Etc.

I think, normal images straight out of your camera are probably 20% "cropped."

I don't know why people on your page would assume you cropped the image. However, by "nice framing," the person is complementing your ability to photograph something without excessive distraction. Perhaps he/she is the one who doesn't know the difference between copping and framing.
