I think the Wired folks should jump in the hole. The beauty in photography, as in any artistic expression, is in the eye of the beholder. There is a big difference between stock photos and photographic "expression".

I really get tired (and drop subscriptions) of magazines that sing the praises of the "rules" of good photography, then select their "winning" photographs, all of which blatantly ignore those same rules. Not that I am in favor of rules per say, but...don't be hypocritical.
