Saying Goodbye to my fellow PAD-ers

Post Thu Mar 12, 2009 8:33 pm

It's been a wonderful run, with lots of fellowship and fun, over the past four years or so. The last year wasn't that much fun, as Pbase got slower and slower and nothing ever seemed to get any better. Since it's now to the point where I can't even upload any pictures anymore, I guess the message is that it's time to move on. (For those who haven't been following my travails, let me assure you I've emailed pbase, gotten a response or two after great length, and tried all the usual fixes -- empty cache, try another browser, etc. Nothing ever worked.)

So, I'm going to migrate over to another site, probably SmugMug where I've got a trial account up and cooking. I'll still be Digital Gee over there, or whereever I end up. Come see me sometime!

I'll miss all of you, your wonderful art, and your comments, which often gave me a smile. I feel like I know many of you personally, even though most of you I've never met. Thanks for all your support over the years and thanks for turning me on to PaD. It's been terrific!

Miss you already!

Gary

Hello Gary,

I just posted the message below in the Q&A Forum. I hope that your problem with PBase slowness is somehow solvable. Not only would we hate to see you go, but I can assure you that you will not have the same rapport with photographers or the level of visitors that you have on PBase on other sites. I have had a flickr pro account for over a year. It has 104 items and had 990 views in that time. In contrast in the last month I have gotten an average of over 1,500 hits per day on my PBase account. I've also tried trial accounts with SmugMug (which doesn't allow commenting) Zenfolio, Trekearth and Picasa. None of these sites allow the level of customization using html or CSS you have on PBase. Most don't have different templates for your galleries nor do they allow creating sub-galleries or the freedom to move images from gallery to gallery that you have with PBase. I really hope your problem can be solved.

Best Wishes,

Walter

"I'm totally mystified by this. I have no problems with slowness at the moment. I went to your profile page, the all galleries page, several gallery pages and images and none took more than 5 seconds to open. It takes me 10 to 15 seconds to upload images and about the same time for comments to post. Navigation is less than 5 seconds in my own galleries and those of others. As the crow flies I live about 6 miles from you and can not understand what is causing your problems. I have spoken to several other PBasers in the San Diego area and they are not presently experiencing slowness."

Gary, I believe it's not the broblem with Pbase, as Walter said, I have sometimes slow work here in Warsaw too, but it comes and goes and gets OK again. Talk to Walter, you live in the same area, maybe he can help.

And please, don't leave, we will miss your UNIQUE sense of humor.

I also live in San Diego, and have had no problems with Pbase...maybe it is your modem...I am thinking on getting a new one myself. Please stay, I like your comments and your pictures. You, Walter and I all see San Diego with different eyes. I find it fascinating to compare our views. You have lots of friends here, too.

FYI: I went shooting with three San Diego PBasers Sunday Night and asked them if they currently have problems with slowness. None of them do and I don't either.

I'm glad some of my fellow San Diegans seem to have no problems with pbase. For what it's worth, it's been a LITTLE better lately. I can upload a picture (although I haven't tried today). I can comment, but there's still a long time before it posts. I do try the trick of hitting Next or Previous which seems to work, but begs the question of why I should need to do that.

And by the way, I'm on a new computer as of maybe a week ago, and still having some of the problems. Newly downloaded browser, Safari 4.0, as well. So it continues to baffle me.

As long as I can sort of kind of once in a while get it to work, I suppose I'll continue to hang out. But if it gets as frustrating as it was last week or two, I'm done. thanks for listening!

A lot of us feel the same as you, Gary. It seems amazing that Pbase are so poor on customer service!

I hope you don't leave but will keep in touch on FB no doubt! Best wishes, my friend!

It's funny all this, I have the same problem, I'm on cable, all other site is super fast, but pbase, I almost didn't renew last time, but I want to check out what I have here. Some server are giving me free space just to post in their forum, but I do not know how to work Gallery, they say it's like Pbase but... I can't even get started. My slowlyness at pbase started a year ago, and it hasnt stopped since. Firefox, IE no difference. I go to google, and post there super fast, their maps zip by, etc, the same with flicker, and about 2 dozen other photo sites. Here one in ten post goes super fast, but don't know why other 9 posts (photos or messages) take so long. Sometimes I just leave the computor, and go and get a coffee. It's that long. Another thing, is when I post a comment on pbase, the return doesn't work, so I open another page leave a message on some other photo, and start a third message when finally the 1st one is done. :( Luckely its winter and i'm home, but during summer I just dont even participate in forum activity because of this.
