Adding my two cents...
I vote.
I vote for pictures/galleries deserving to be seen by other.
Getting vote it is something that boost my ego (and it is a nice thing), but I really would like to get a comment saying "Hey, why did you crop that picture like that?" and grow with other people comments.
I know I am the first culprit, just leaving very short comments, but it is a lack of time problem and I do want leaving a sign that I appreciate someone else job.

I defititely vote much less than when I started: I formed my idea what is a wow picture or an outstanding gallery.
I agree: always the same people are in the Popular Galleries, someone really deserve it, someone not in my opininion (looks to me they got lots of friends around the world!) but I can find very interesting photographers that I could not discover in any other way... And that's good.

:)

Voting is a nice feature of Pbase.
I vote if I think that the gallery or photo is worth it. Most of the times a post a comment but do not include 'vote'/'voted'/'v' in the comment.
Maybe that's why I don't get many votes. ;)

I do also agree that there are much the same photographers in the popular galleries and not all of those galleries are excellent IMO.

Too bad that you cannot track the votings (and people who made you a 'favorite artist') in pbase. It would be a very welcome feature.

Anyone who has spent anytime in any of these forums has observed the issues that are currently raging here. From the "Spamming" of the Show and Tell forums, the over posting to PAD galleries, the removal of Glamour photography, all of it relates to the overwhelming desire by some to be in the popular galleries. And in doing so they have stepped on a lot of toes and angered many in the process. Because of this Glamour photography is simply hidden. Political galleries are moved. Limits are set on how often we can post in the S&T forums.

I think it is time the Popular Galleries be removed in place of other vehicles where we can promote our work. How about the ability to create topical groups that others can join where the group creator sets & enforces the rules and not Pbase. Flikr uses something like this.
