Image size and monitor resolution

Post Sat May 27, 2006 8:49 am

For the best viewing experience to most, how wide and tall should our images
really be? According to statistics at w3c 20% still use a monitor resolution of a mere
800x600px, 57% use 1024x768px and only 17% use a higher resolution than that:

Statistics are statistics and people using Pbase may differ from the general public
when it comes to monitor resolution. I thought it would be interesting to know
what screen resolution most people around here are using - as opposed to on
the internet in general. Therefore, I started a poll:

If you haven't already, would you please be so kind and vote? It won't take much
of your time, I promise. I hope I am not violating any forum rules by promoting
the poll like this. I have not been able to find any forum rules. The question
and poll really concerns all Pbasers, but not everyone reads the
HTML and Style Sheets forum...

Previous results from same question here http://forum.pbase.com/viewtopic.php?t=15538&highlight=monitor

However, connection speed would also affect the size people view images at.

I have an old video card in my machine and use a CRT display, all I get out of it is 1600x1200
I think you need to clarify your question a bit. There are additional issues such as potential theft of high-resolution images.
As you know any image that you view on the web is downloaded and resides on your computer and potentially could then be used by someone for his or her own purposes.
For that reason I use 800x533 as a max. size for display on the web.
So if someone uses one of my images for their own purposes all they get is a lousy low resolution 120 Kb image with no commercial value whatsoever

I'm with 5points - I keep the image size and quality down for anything on the net - besides, it means they load very fast and tend be more suitable for all kinds of browsers and connection speeds (nothing turns me away so fast as tediously waiting for a giant image to load)

Just my 2 cents worth

Yes, I recommend keeping the longest side of the image no more than
800px. The trouble is when the image is a vertical, 800px will be too tall
for many and they will have to use scroll-bars to see the whole image.

I wouldn't say 800x533px is without any commercial value
whatsoever. It could be used on the internet (and this happens quite a
lot) and it really is amazing what can be achieved with such low res
images, when printing with the right software...
