Remarks on tuscan landscapes

Post Tue Jun 26, 2007 11:43 am

This weekend I finally went driving Crete and Val d'Orcia to see/take
photographs those postcard landscapes. Here are just a few remarks
and personal opinions which may be useful for people travelling there
for the first time. (All the remarks are based on late June weather and sun).

1. The most beautiful line of cypress trees is in la Foce. You should
approach it from SW, and the correct light is in the morning.

2. The view from the walls of Pienza is simply stunning (also morning
photography).

3. The white chapel you see on all the photographs is between San
Quirico d'Orcia and Pienza, to the right if you dirve to Pienza
(evening photography)

4. The famous group of cypresses is on SS2 close to San Quirico d'Orcia
on the way to Siena (evening)

5. Fro standard San Antimo photos come in the morning, thought
a nice half destroyed cloister with lavander is better in the afternoon.

6. San Galgano is lighted in the evening, but not for too long! Also there
is a very nice and inexpensive restaurant right next to the abbey.

7. For photos of Monte Oliveto Maggiore come in the morning to the village right above the monastery, but expect no fog in June/July :)

8. Road 438 is very nice all the way to Asciano, but the roads from
Asciano to Pienza via Monte Oliveto Maggiore and Sant'Anna and
the road from Monteroni d'Arbia are equally nice so feel free
to explore.

In general, I think it would be great to have a database/guide for all 'standard' and just nice place for photography (with GPS coordinates,
directions, suggestions). There might be one, but I haven't found it yet.

Cheers,
Pavel.
