I took some shots of Clayqouot Sound on the weekend. This is one of the westernmost points of Canada - it's on the coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. I've tried to find other Clayoquot Sound images online and there aren't that many so I thought I'd share.

Clayoquot Sound is the stage where environmentalists and the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations parked themselves in the tops of 500-year-old trees for months (some were there for over a year) on end in one of the highest-profile wilderness protection efforts in Canada. In 1993 856 people were arrested for their involvement in the protests and blockades, the largest peaceful civil disobedience in Canadian history.

Clayoquot Sound is one of the largest and richest lowland coastal temperate rainforest known on the planet. In January 2000, Clayoquot Sound was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This designation does not offer any additional protection to the area and industrial logging continues to destroy the Sound’s forests.

There are two fishing villages -- Tofino and Ucluelet -- on either side of Pacific National Park. There is also a fast-growing tourism business, bringing nature lovers from all over the world. The most famous beach in British Columbia is also here -- the 13,715-hectare Long Beach, a surfer's heaven.
