what camera???!

Post Tue Sep 07, 2004 2:56 am

i have a friend and he is looking to get a nice camera that has the ability to produce large prints. he really wants to be able to do a 30x40, he doesn't care if its a little distorted close-up, but he wants a good overall image from about 10 feet.

he really *doesn't* want an slr, if possible (dont ask me why) and i've been talking with him about what i think might be good, but i really want your opinions, the experts that you are!

i'd appreciate any advice you guys might have!

thanks,
Crystal

Doesn't want a SLR? Does that also mean that he doesn't want a dSLR? (A digital SLR.)

If a dSLR is out of the picture then I'd suggest one of the 8 meg fixed-lenses. My favorite is the Minolta A2 because of image stabilization and the excellent view finder. The Olympus C8080 also is highly rated but has a shorter zoom.

30" x 40" is a pretty big print but 10' is a pretty big viewing distance. More pixels are going to help but you don't need a ton. The A2 has a 3264 x 2448 pixel array and will do a 30" x 20" print at about 110 dpi. Remember that billboards can look quite nice and are printed at 50 dpi.

If a dSLR is a possibility then the Canon 20D (also 8 megs) is worth considering.

If his pockets are deep then the 11 meg Canon 1DS or 14 meg Kodak 14s/n/c.

If his pockets are very deep there's the digital MF backs....

I will have to agree with Bob in his considerations about the Minolta A2 & the Olympus C8080. Both seems to be very good cameras.

If he doesn't want to go SLR, than check out (and probably checkout) the A2 as recommened above. I have an A1 and LOVE it ... The 8meg A2 should do the trick.

If it's about image quality, the Olympus 8080 seems to be the answer. The shorter zoom was selected on purpose, to deliver a better quality. Also it seems that out of the five 8 MP cameras, only Olympus was able to solve the noise problems.

However, as indicated before, a DSLR is a better choice.
