10D -- Canon 14mm L or 16-35mm L?

Post Wed Aug 27, 2003 11:49 pm

I love the Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5, but 24mm on a 22.66mm sensor is a far cry from "wide angle," and there have already been too many times in the three weeks that I've had the 10D that I've needed a much side lens.

I really can't afford the 14mm L or the 16-35mm L right now, but I like to have my shopping done before I'm ready to do my buying. Is the 16mm going to be wide enough? Is the 14mm even going to be wide enough? Will Canon follow Nikon's lead and introduce an ~12mm lens? (Canon follow Nikon's lead?)

I've got a Canon 70-200mm f/4 L, and I'm sold on L-series lenses. I would have bought the 24-70mm f/2.8 L with the 10D if it hadn't been a $1400.00 budget buster at the time.

I'm thinking of getting the 17-40L also. It doesn't go quite to f/2.8, but it is half the price of the 16-35L. I'd love to have the 16-35, but just don't want to spend that much money right now...

okay, I've modified poll to include the EF 17-40mm f/4L USM and extended the poll to 45 days of voting.

I've also changed all of the labels to match exactly Canon's nomenclature for clarity.

As a side note, I'm not talking about actually writing a check for this lense any time soon. I'm doing my "shopping" (which is not the same as buying). What lense would you buy if someone handed you $4000.00 in cash, and said, "Half of this has to be spent on lenses," and you were looking for a wide angle lens.

In this case, I'd definitely go with the 16-35 f/2.8L, and round it out with either the 35-350 f/3.5-5.6L or the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L.

But, since this is the real world, I'll probably end up settling for the 17-40 f/4L and rent one of the other two when I need it.

I also have a 10D and a 70-200 f4.0L, my temporary solution was a Tamron 19-35mm. It is about $200.00 and the pictures are great!

My 10D bag has the 28-135 IS, 17-35L, 100 Macro, & 70-300 IS. The 28-135 is the most versatile and is the lens that stays on the camera. But my favorite is the 17-35 out in the field....tack sharp.
