Hi,
I have recently been given a Canon A70 and would like to take b/w pictures. How do I do this? Is it a settingon the camera or a software setting somewhere?

There should be a setting on the camera that allows you to take B&W photos, as well as "Sepia" and "Vivid"... I know these are the features of many PowerShot models. Read the manual for the exact steps.

Go to manual shoot mode, hit funtion key and look for the effect option !

You can take the shots as B&W but for maximum quality/control people take the shots in color and then convert with software.
