Hi,

The Canon-10D was a bit too expensive for my budget, but with this announcement, maybe I could afford a digital SLR by the end of the year.

Here is an article on DpReview. It looks really promising:

really cool, but makes the E-20 a tough contender.. I'm choosing between the two. I like the f/2-2.4 lens of the e-20. But as an EOS (film) owner, i got a couple of lenses that i could snap in the 300D. too bad the brighter lenses of CANON are way too expensive, even 3rd-party equivalents. Hmm.. hope prices really drop this year-end

If you could wait the 2-3 months after the camera hit the stores for the initial rush to pass, you could probably save an additional $200 or so.

I got my 10D three weeks ago today. I'm so impressed with it that I can't even find words. After looking over the specs for the 300D/Digital Rebel, and seeing that the Digital Rebel is about 90% of the 10D, I'd have to say, "Call today, get your name on the preorder lists!" The other 10%? Oh, just all of the expensive parts. I was relly suprised at how much of the 10D "guts" Canon reused in the Rebel. Of course, the flip side of that is that the price of the 10D will come down (or Canon's margin will go up) since it's pretty much a given that the Rebel will be a huge seller.

For all of the Nikon lovers out there, wait until Nikon responds -- this is gonna be good!

Yeah I'm a Nikon user but I could go either way. I use a Nikon FE with two lenses. An aftermarket zoom and a 50MM Nikkor.

Typically I've always liked Nikons beter because of the aperture being around the lens barrel and larger grip the cameras have. But newer cheaper Nikons are shaped like Canons and now use that crappy G lens that takes the aperture ring off the lens and makes it digital. Plus Nikon has been making it so that some of their cheaper cameras can't use their more expensive lenses.

With this in mind I'd be willing to buy into a Canon system. I owned a Canon film SLR before and it was a nice. Took it to europe with me and shot a bunch of great shots. But I sold it because I didn't care for the feel of it. But I was more picky back then.

! I'm shocked! What happened to the "All Nikon lenses fit all Nikon bodies" line?

I like Canon for the oposite reason -- I like Canon lenses. I chose my A2e because it was part of the EOS system, and EOS leses are far and away the most advanced. Ofter buying, owning, shooting and loving the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L, I never considered anything other than Canon's digital SLRs.

If you're willing to jump the Nikon ship, your pain for adjusting to Canon bodies and controls would be amply rewarded with the lens options you'd have.

Granted, not all Canon lenses are great... many aren't even good. I have taken to calling Canon's cheapo-crap consumer leses "Rebel lenses." They are price point lenses for bundling with the Rebel. It became apparent to Canon that all of the big retailers where bundling the Canon bodies (even the EOS 3) with cheap-crap Tamron leses just to have a low priced bundle. Canon decided that they could sell the same quality lens, and keep that money for themselves. I don't blame them, but I won't touch the lenses!

As for Nikon bodies, I think Nikon has some of the best designed SLR bodies and features you can get... but they won't talk to my EOS lenses, so I'm not interested. ;)

It's happenning more and more often over here with things like this. In the UK it's quite common for the price of the Playstation to drop a hundred quid or so as soon as the january sales are over. This leaves people feeling cheated. Having said that, sometimes its worth paying a couple of hundred quid extra to get the goods in your hand. I gues it all depends on how materialistic you are. I don't know about the US but Amazon UK is currently selling the 300D with a 18-55mm lens kit for around £800. I suggest keeping an eye on it and waiting if you can. Or you could save up for the 8MP cameras :)
