Can you give me one good reason for going to the 7D from my 40D? There have been some negative reviews. One review said the 40D has some features they wish the 7D had.

On the web these can easily be found and confirmed by hands on experience, in random order:

- better noise control
- way better environmental sealing
- better and more versatile autofocus
- better button layout
- very good video (in case you're interested)
- composition support in viewer (well that's not essential, but nice)
- almost double resolution (nice if you do large prints or strong cropping)
- better lcd

But it will cost you much more and the 40D is already a good camera. It depends on your needs of course. I do not know what 40D features the 7D is lacking.

Yeah, I can see the difference. I'm not a pro photographer but work with Photoshop and like to take very good photos. When I retire, I plan to do a lot of travelling and this camera would be ideal, albeit it's a little bit bulky, but that's the price you pay for quality?

I'm on the phone right now with Canon who is walking me through the differences. Price is steep right now. May have to wait for rebates through Costco?

I happen to have both cameras after purchasing the 7D 2 weeks ago. The biggest difference I feel is the sensor which enables the 7D to go up to 6400 on ISO. This is handy in low light conditions especially if one dislikes flash photography. The 19 point focusing is more precise although I am still getting use to it as it seems a little slower when 'one shot' is used. If you like burst mode for action photography, then 7D is better. If you are looking for a second hand 40D, there is plenty of bargains to be had, but getting a good one is a matter of luck. The 7D is slightly heavier than 40D though. Some of my friends have turned to four third systems because they no longer want to carry heavy DSLRs on vacation. One more thing, if you use Lightroom to post process your photos, they can't handle 7D's raw format, well not properly anyway. Adobe will presumably solve the problem in theie next release. I already have the 40D and was trying to find a reason for spending the extra money for the 7D. As I don't shoot sport scenes and a lot of night scenes, I can't yet justify the extra cost for the 7D. However, the excitement for having something "better" to some, is a justifiable reason. I'm still wrestling with the decision. Right now I'm in limbo but I will consider all comments, reviews, wether negative or positive. Thanks to all for your input...

You don't say what glass you are using, better to upgrade to L type glass before camera upgrade, but 7d far better than 40d, I have the 7d, great camera, can't wait for the 8d

i bought a Canon 7D last February, after reading comments, previews and all..
Well, i don't ask you to believe me as i believed those previews..
My only advise is to borrow one and try it, with different lenses and ISO, before buying it..
i am truly dissatisfied.... it is muddy definition, it is high noise at ISO 640 and on...
i had a 100/400 canon lens and when you focus on a non so bright subject, you will never get great definition...


i got many advises how to pass hours in photoshop sharpening the area and bluring the other.. that is not my aim, and when it is bad, is bad, no PS will save you.
i was said i had bad pulse, i didnt know how to focus, i ddint know how to use and so on..it is possible, but then when i tried with the canon 5DmarkII, images were absolutely focused. yes, mark II is better camera, but focus is focus..
i made many tries with tripod, as well...
well, hope you didnt buy yet and again, don't believe me, and don't believe any review.. just borrow one and try it..
