hi. here the differences between nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 and the new Nikon 70-200 f2.8 vr-II.

200mm focal length to the new Nikon is "more angular than the 80-200mm, provided that focuses on a nearby object.

if you focus far the difference is negligible.

test with 80-200mm:

80-200 is old school AF-D. Loud AF motor, no manual focus adjustment in AF mode. 70-200 is new tech AF-S, silent wave motor, manual focus adjustment in AF mode. Wider angle means at it has a wider field of view. Finally the Vibration Reduction System. 80-200's are out of production, and have been for 18 months or so. The 70-200 AF-S VRII is the updated release of the 70-200 AF-S VR.

And "updated" means what exactly, besides $500 more than the original 70-200 f/2.8 VR ?

70-200 compared to previous this is no vignetting in the corners fx format. focusing is faster and is of exceptional quality.

except the story of the "angular" 200mm when I focus on nearby subjects, I am delighted with the purchase of this lens.

I switched from a Canon 5D and associated lenses to a Nikon D700 in late 2008. Sadly, the part exchange value meant I didn't have enough spare cash to purchase a 70-200 replacement.

However, today I had a moment of weakness and ordered this lens, tomorrow it will be delivered and I have to say I am a tad excited at the thought!

Roll on delivery man!
