Total n00b Help!!

Hi im new to digital photography and totally taken away with the IR shots. I have a 717, and want to use the filters needed to get that result. I also know where to get them so and which ones to use, so that won't be a problem either. Here's the thing though, how do you install the filters? do you click them on the lens? Do i have to open up the lens somehow to put them in or smthn? Is it a risky operation? I totally have no idea, and would appreciate any help u guys can offer on clarifying the use of filters for me.
