Canon Tripod Mount Rings

Is it just me or does anyone else think that the Canon tripod mounts are *way* overpriced?
I've been looking for a good used 70-200 f/4 IS, and checking prices on tripod mounts. Other than Canon mounts that sell new for $130-$140 (haven't found a source for used ones), I've come across some 3rd-party mounts that sell for $30-$40. Does anyone have any experience with these? Are the genuine Canon mounts really worth $100 more? If you've found a good 3rd-party mount, where did you get it?

There are some coming out of China, based on posts I've read in other forums users seem to like them, needless to say they are very inexpensive. Here's a link to a rather long review/discussion/argument thread that mentions a couple of manufacturers. I've never used them so I can't comment, this is just an FYI.
