Cleaning the d40

How do i expose the sensor for cleaning?

Not so strange really. Look in the menus. My D200 has a wrench thingie menu. In this menu there is a mirror up option, that you set. When it's set, you depress the shutter release, the mirror flips up and stays there until you turn the camera power off. I suspect most Nikons will do it in a similar manner. In my case it will not function under a certain battery charge level. You can see this by the menu entry being grayed out, and unavailable.

The menu item that you should look, is named Mirror Lock-Up or MLU.
Be aware that shutting the camera when cleaning might damage the mirror.
Cleaning is fairly easy but you need to be gentle.
