telephoto lens for Nikon D80

Hi all,

I would like to get another lens for my Nikon, this time a telephoto as there are a lot of shots that I can't get with the lenses I have at the moment.
I have been into a shop in Jersey and had a look at some Sigma Lenses, but they seem to be an all-round lens, which by the sound of some reviews isn't very good. As they say a "jack of all trades, and master of none".
I had a look at the Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6 APO DG Macro £152
Tamron 70-300 F4-5.6 Di lens, this one was half price at £99.

I don't want to get a telephoto lens that is going to comprimise quality.

Does anyone have any recommendations that would be reasonable price? If I had the money I would just buy a Nikon lens and not even question what I want.

Richard

For the lenses you're looking at you might want to seriously consider saving a little more and getting the Nikkor 70-300VR. I had the Tamron as well and if you're willing to stabilize it especially at the long end, it's a great lens for the price. If you choose the Tamron, don't be tempted by any TCs for it to extend the range. From experience, hand held in good light at 300mm, VR will ensure you are able to keep 80% of the shots, but with the Tamron you'll throw 80% because of movement. I'm afraid, as usual, money will be the decider, but if you can wait for the extra money it will pay off. Another option to consider is the 18-55VR and 55-200VR as a set for a lot of reasons.
