Software problems with D300-NEFs in portrait format

Have a D300 since two weeks. The camera works fine, but I have problems with my raw converter software. I usually use CaptureOne (version 4.1, on a MacBook pro, OSX 5.5). Capture one is not able to display NEFs from the D300 taken in portrait format, and when I try to open one of these files, the software just crashes. Whats even more surprising is that Nikon's very own software Capture NX also cannot handle these files. It can display them as thumbnails in the browser, bt as soon as I want to open one of them for processing, the program crahses. Has anyone encountered similar problems, or suggestions how to solve them. Wrote to both Nikon and Phase One, but did not receive any response so far.

Cheers,
Eckhart

Hi Eckhart,
You're out of my base on this because I'm not using Nikon, or Mac or Capture One. But, first thing I'd do is check their websites for updates, and possible compatibility problems. And hopefully someone else using the same things will come by.
Hope you get it sorted,
tom

Hi tom,
Thanks for your supply. Actually, I already did a number of updates so far, but none of these has worked. What I learned meanwhile is that only Capture NX 1.3.1 or later are able to display RAWs from the D300 (and you have to install a quick fix for OSX 5.5). Why the camera comes with a CD-ROM of the 1.3.0 version, nobody knows, probably not even the Nikon people.

Hi again,
The most logical reason for outdated CD's is due to people in the business end of things being smart. It's probably cheaper to produce CD's in higher quantities, than smaller updated versions with each new model. Anyone using the CD is going to have a computer, so updating from the web is less expensive. Saving in production costs helps keep price down. Just a thought...

Still hope someone will come by who's had the problem.

Keep us posted if you find the answer,
tom

Meanwhile I found the reason for my problems. I had used "Picture Project" for the transfer from the D80 to the computer, so without much thinking I also used it for the transfer from the D300. Picture Project transferred the images as usual, was able to dispaly them, even the portrait format ones and also was able to make a slideshow. So I thought, there could not be anything wrong with that. However, there was. Obviously Picture Project did not transfer some information the other programs needed to interpret images correctly as portrait format. Yesterday evening I installed "Nikon Transfer" from the CD coming with the camera, and it did not work either (version 1.0 did not even recognize the camera when I conected it to the computer. I really could hate Nikon for that! They may have other priorities but I think it is not too much to expect that when I buy a brand new, expensive camera, the software coming with it should fuction without being forced to search for updates on the net. Or am I just too naive?). Today, I searched for updates and found that meanwhile there was a version 1.2. I downloaded and installed it and all of a sudden it worked. The images downloaded with Nikon Transfer 1.2 were interpreted by both Capture NX and Capture One, and the programs did not crash anymore. Well, finally it works, but it cost me three evenings to get things straigt....
And there is one problem left: I still have more than hundred portrait format NEF images transferred with Picture Project which I cannot convert into JPG. Any ideas how to do that?

Thanks to Tom and everyone else who cared to think about my problems.
Cheers,
Eckhart

Well, that's good news & bad news. At least you won't have problems from now on.

Okay... Since I'm not a Mac user, please overlook my ignorance, but at least updates helped it seems. Needing updates is actually fairly common, and some programs which are loaded from CD's ask if you want to update, others not. Installation can sometimes be time consuming though, and we pass without thinking, or miss it entirely. I really don't think Nikon is alone if it's not automatic. Canon releases updates fairly often, and they're not done automatically. I guess they figure it's free, so you can check to find them. Once you have problems, they know you'll find them!

"Picture Project" is yet another program I've never used. So are you saying it doesn't convert the files to any other format, such as TIFF? Surely that can't be!
If it converts to TIFF, then you should be able to convert to jpg from there. If not, search again and see if there's a plug in which will work with it, or one of your other programs. Sometimes it's a pain, but until file types are made standard we'll have to put up with it.

Still thinking someone else will come in the thread??
