Tamron 18-200 or 18-250

Post Tue Aug 26, 2008 2:12 am

Hi,
I am very new to SLR cameras (6 months).I have a Pentax K10D ,Tamron 28-80 and Tamron 70-300.
I looking for a walk around lens so I don't have to keep changing lenses and I really don't care for the 28-80
My problem is I am on a limited budget ($300.00) I would like to get the Tamron 18-250 but I would have wait a few more months but by
than the money could be gone . So my main question is would I be wasting my money if I buy the Tamron 18-200? I can get it for $239.00
after rebate
Thanks Dante

The longer the zoom range the softer (less sharp) a lens will be, so the vagueries would suggest the 18-200 would be a better lens, but there won't be a great deal between them. At 250mm you might struggle to hand hold especially with F6.3 as the widest aperture unless you have extremely bright light or are happy increasing ISO. Given the vague numbers I'd go for the 18-200 for the money now and use your feet to get the extra 50mm!!!

I don't know much about Pentax but wonder if DA 18-55mm and DA 50-200mm would be a better combination. The 50-200 would be the carry around and you an switch to the 18-55 for wider shots that you'll be able to take your time shooting. Both lenses have a 52mm filter size so over time you an add close up filters, circular polarizers etc. as you feel your scope increasing. Each of the lenses will be sharper and have a wider aperture to increase your capabilities.

I find the 18-250 Tamron quite a good lens for walking around with. There is chromatic aberration and some softness, but it holds up quite well.

I bought the Tamron 18-200 for a "run out price" and it now is my main lens on the 400D because of its lightness and versitility. The lens is sharp enough but there is some chromatic aberation in crops of high contrast. There are some photos in my 50D test gallery along with the Canon 17-85 IS usm lens. Here two clicakable examples from that gallery

At 42mm and

at 200mm.
Crops at 600 X 400 pixels are also in the gallery.
