problems with my D300

Post Sat Aug 09, 2008 5:15 am

well was out doing some macro shots today when all of the sudden my auto focus stopped working. my AF-On button doesnt work at all. cannot even change the focus selection on it. I pressed the reset button, but fresh batteries, cleaned the contacts.
i wonder if my sigma lens messed it up. I used my 70-200 2.8 vr lens yesterday and worked perfect, so I put my new sigma 24-70 2.8 on and took about 6 shots with it Im planing to take it back to the camera shop to see if maybe I pushed the wrong button or turned something off. Thanks any help would be great. Dustin

So forgive me for asking the obvious.. but, does the 70-200 still work? That would be a the first thing I'd check. If so my instinct says loose contact on the Sigma.
Also as you said check all the switches, to makes sure they're in the AF position. I did this with my D-200 recently and it drove me nuts for 5 minutes, as nothing would focus I had bumped the switch on the front of the body to M....

yeah I put the 70-200 on my D200 and works fine. I took it to the camera shot and they think the AF motor went out. So Im out of my new camera with 4 big shoots coming up for 4-6 weeks

Sorry to hear that. I intended to ask if the 70-200 worked on the D300 as a check against the Sigma going bad.

I had a New Sigma 105 f2.8 do this on my D200. Just a motor winding noise but no focus on the lens. I took the lens off them put it back on
and it worked just fine. Sigma lenses hunt like crazy on my Nikon bodys.

I've had similar problems with both my D2Xs and D300 with Sigma lenses (100-300/4 and 10-20mm). I've decided to get rid of the unoriginal optics and stick to Nikkor no matter what. It would seem like as if Sigma has got serious problems with the "communication" between the lens and camera. I own 9 Nikkor lenses in addition to the 2 Sigma lenses I've thrown out, and never experienced any problems of any kind with these lenses.

So my advice would be to stick with Nikon, and it'll work forever:-)
