Which package should I purchase?

Post Wed Jul 30, 2008 11:52 pm

I have done quite a bit of research and given my budget, have whittled down my options to the following 3 packages. I would mostly be bringing my gear with me when I am on travel and would take a mix of landscapes, buildings, people with landmarks behind them, etc. (just about anything) I am not sure how important the 18-28mm range is. I know that wide angle is good for landscape photography but how bad is a 28mm? Also, I am not sure when 135mm would not be sufficient and one would need to go all the way up to 200mm. Last but not least, I am not sure how convenient/inconvenient it would be to change lenses while on travel. I understand that the D60 and 40D are very different cameras but I am willing to look at both of them. My options are as below, would be most grateful if people on this forum would be able to help me out. Thanks in advance!

1. Nikon D60 with 18-55mm VR and 55-200mm VR ~$850

2. Canon EOS 40D with 28-135mm IS ~$1150

3. Nikon D60 with 18-200mm VR ~$1300

I know little of Nikon so will concentrate on the Canon. I believe that the 40D is a good camera for the price. With regards to the 28-135, the reviews are mixed. I suggest that you go to Fred Miranda's reviews at http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews
and check out this lens. For landscapes, one cannot really go past the Canon 17-40 f/4. That said, the last time I was in Paris, I found that I used my Canon 70-200 f/4 L IS more than I had anticipated.

I have always thought that if one buys cheap, one buys twice! (I know of what I speak!!) :D Buy good glass and it will outlast any camera body by around ten years at least!

Since these are all 1.5 (DX) sized sensor cameras, I suspect you will want the 18mm (or shorter) range. Nikon makes a very nice 16-85mm 3.5/4.5 with VR that is worth a look. 28mm isn't really a wide angle lens on DX. The thing to remember is that a DX sensors effectively adds a 1.5x magnification factor to all the lenses you put on them, unless the lens is made for DX cameras. In this case they act normally. The 80-200 VR is rated as a solid all around lens.
