sigma10-20 and tokina 10-17

Post Fri Jul 04, 2008 2:56 am

sigma 10-20 is a wide angel lens
tokina 10-17 ia a fish eye lens (with 17 as wide i think)

i am thinking to get both of this lens for my d40x. the tokina is for creative and fun picture. and the sigma is for normal shotting with wide angel. and i have the kit lens nikor 18-55.

do you think it worth to get both lens? i like to shoot usingin the wide angle. and i also wanted to have one fisheye lens for the fun of its effect. do any one have any other combination? any sugestion? just get sigma or the tokina or both?

No reason not to go with both I you can swing it, but I'd switch the Sigma for this Tokina 11-16 wide which I believe is due out shortly... if it wasn't just released. I think the Tokina's are built better. The other well received Tokina is this 12-24mm

I own a Sigma 10-20, and it's my favorite lens to use when not shooting macro. As far as build, it has HSM motor (similar to Canons USM) and has proven to be
tough as a tank in my humble opinion. Tokina's might be a little heavier made, but I'm not convinced the over all quality is better. If you're going with two lenses though, why not get a prime fisheye? From reading reviews for the Tokina, it's said to be a bit soft for enlargements, which wouldn't be a real surprise considering what they're trying to get from it.

I have a few shots made with the Sigma 10-20 you can view here: http://www.dangphoto.net Nothing special done in processing, just a bit of normal sharpening, and could probably use more work since my processing is terrible anyway.

You might also check the camera database for examples from the Tokina when available, and ask those using it their opinions. Until you have something in your hands to shoot with, it's difficult to know how well it performs. It's also good to take into account with lenses of this price range, quality control isn't always the best. So check any lens you get, and be sure it performs to standards from the start.

Good luck, and enjoy!
