Buying Cannon 40d and 24-105/4EF IS USM Lens any info thanks

In june of 2007 and have been having a blast with it. Being. I'am a coast to coast truck driver and I get to a lot of cool places for 8, 10, 14 hrs. or a couple of days every week or so.I like my rebel xt just fine but the lens could use some help i.e. EFS 18-55mm and a EF 75-300. I noticed my 16 year old getting real good shots with my Rebel xt when she used it, So I figured why not give it to her to get great photos when i'am not home. I think the lens upgrade would of been all I needed but wanted my Daughter to have a Rebel xt. So any help or thoughts on my up grade to a 40d and the 24-105/4 EF IS usm Lens would be greatly appreciated.
