See http://www.pbase.com/cameras/nikon/70-200_28g_afs

If I had money burning a hole in my pocket I wouldn't question getting one.

They are right nice. I don't have that sort of cash so I went with the 80-200 2.8 AF-D which is the lens that 70-200 replaces. If you are confident in your ability this is a valid alternative at ~1/2 the price. They are going out of production, and may only be available online/mail order. Very sharp lens, very fast. Good AF although it has some limitations.

I love mine! I use it quite a bit for indoor basketball. Check out my photos here: http://www.pbase.com/andrewnyhus

The 70-200 is whats on my camera most of the time, super sharp, great contrast and super quick AF, if you've got the cash, go for it.

I own one

I own one and I love it. Not only for the picture quality but the build quality and weather sealing. I took a hike in heavy snow with my D300 and this lens today :)

Yah, I've had my D200 and 70-200 out in rather heavy rain with no problems, but then again, i've done the same with my Sigma 10-20 mounted

I commend your extreme weather camera usage. :)
