New lense for my Nikon D80--help?

Post Tue Nov 20, 2007 4:21 am

I'm looking for a new lense for my Nikn D80. I would like to get a wide angle lens. I was considering getting one of the 2 following lenses:

AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 G
AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 G

I have been told "go for it" and "those aren't really for that camera". If you have suggestions or information, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm not an expert, but given what you are looking at I wonder if AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED (3.2x) would give you more scope and save you a few $s.

As quoted by Nikon,
"G Type DX Nikkor is designed exclusively for use with Nikon Digital SLR models"

See below for review of DX lenes,

I bought the 24mm F2.8 as it's wide enough for what I like. A bargain, but the wider primes are a little more expensive, but would still leave you with plenty of $s for other considerations.

Both lenses will no doubt proove to be top performers, however, neither will give you an ultra wide field of view on your D80. Currently the widest lens available for the Nikon DX cameras is the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 DC HSM. I have this lens and swear by it, it pretty much stays on my D200, just make sure you test before you buy as there have been a few dodgy samples floating around. The other option would be, as stated, the Nikkor AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8G IF ED, this would give you a nice 26-83mm equivilant field of view.

24-70 isn't really wide angle on a crop body. Go for the 14-24 or Nikkor or Tokina 12-24 f/4 if you don't need the 2.8 and want to save some money.
Nikon D300, D200
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D, 55mm f/1.4 micro, 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G DX, 80-200 f/2.8D
Apple PowerBook G4, MacBook Pro
Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop CS3

Interesting, I hadn't seen that. The 12-24 is bang on at half the price of the Nikkor, hopefully this one will be good as well.
