From the following website

"October 17, 2007: A fix may be two weeks away

In the We've heard from a large and growing number of photographers today that Canon USA's customer care centre is advising EOS-1D Mark III owners who call in that a fix for the camera's AI Servo autofocus problems is approximately two weeks away, that it will involve replacing the sub-mirror (a mirror behind the main reflex mirror that passes light to the autofocus sensor module) and that customer care reps are taking down contact information from those customers who would like to be notified when the fix is available."

From http://www.digitalslr.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?p=61826#61826

"Canon support as of TODAY finally have a statement they can give to MkIII owners who call in about the focusing issue.

THEY HAVE IDENTIFIED A FIX, AND IT IS NOT FIRMWARE. IT'S A "SUBMIRROR ASSEMBLY" THAT MUST BE REPLACED.

Apparently they are starting to collect names of owners to contact, in addition to going off of existing registration data to set up RMA's for resolution.

Also, rumor has it that the latest production running off the line has been corrected. "

I'm sure they will provide serial numbers of the affected cameras along with any statement they make.
Certainly welcome news if this proves to be true.........

This fix is now confirmed, but no news on the serial numbers of the affected cameras as yet.

The below information which is contained inside the battery compartment will tell you when the camera was manufactured. You will probably need this together with the serial number to determine if the camera needs the fix or not.

First character - production facility:
U = Utsunomiya, Japan
F = Fukushima, Japan
O = Oita, Japan

Second character - year of production:
V = 1981 or 2007
W = 1982 or 2008
X = 1983 or 2009

Next two digits - month of production"
