Nikon 24mm F2.8

Post Wed Sep 19, 2007 1:01 pm

Does anyone have good/bad experiences with Nikon 24mm F2.8? It seems a good compromise on price and capability relative to the 50mm F1.8 which I love using as a landscape lens on my D70s, but is obviously not wide enough on occasions. I know I can get better wide zooms, but $300 seems far more bearable than a price nearer $1,000!!!

I have a 18-70mm but I really don't like the results at the wide end!

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks.

I have a 28mm f/2.8 Ai-S that I use all the time mostly because it has great macro capability.

Just remember that 24mm isn't going to be too wide on a DX sensor. Of course, it will be wider than the 50mm, but not super wide like 18mm.

I have taken some photos using this lens mounted on a Nikon D70:

I'm very satistied with the quality of outputs from this lens, both on film and digital camera in terms of color, contrast and sharpness of image.

I keep one in my bag and use it on my F100. It's a great lens - highly recommended.

Thanks for the feedback. I was already reasonably convinced, but you've confirmed my thoughts. I like the fact that I'll be able to use my ND/CP/3T/4T with it.

Much appreciated.

I'd say (judging from published data) the 18-70mm performs better at 24mm than the AF 24mm, not least in CA performance. Noted expert Dr. Bjørn Rørslett notes the CA problems in his review of the MF version on digital bodies.

Interesting - I'll do more research. Thanks Tucker.
