Yes, it is quite wider than the 18-55 II kit lens.

I bought a super-wide a few months ago and after doing research decided that the Tokina 12-24 has better color and is just as sharp as the Nikkor 12-24 f/4 while being hundreds of dollars less.

I have lots of images from this lens in my galleries... check out my Nikon D50 gallery to see shots from this lens or search for it on PBase.

I ended up buying the Sigma 10-20 and I really like it, however from what I've heard I was very lucky to get a good sample. Its sharp enough from what I can see and the colour redition is pretty nice too. I bought this lens as I wanted the widest I could get.

Yea... I've heard some bad things about the Sigma, so I never considered it.

Happy shooting!

The Tokina won't autofocus on a D40 though.

Damn fine lens.

The Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 has gotten excellent reviews, although I haven't used it myself.

Whatever you decide to buy, make sure it has a Silent Wave Motor for autofocusing, Nikon call it AF-S and Sigma use the designation HSM, not sure about the other manufacturers. If you get a a lens without this, you'll lose autofocus functionality.

It's not a wide angle, but super good the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC HSM Here are good revues on the previous model that did not have HSM. Mine does and it's great.

For auto focus You can use any Nikon lens that is a AF-S lens or a Sigma Lens that is a HSM lens. This is because the D40/40s does not have auto focus motor in the camera. So you need a lens that has a focus motor in the lens to work the auto focus. So this means you can not use any lenses from Tokina or Tamron if you want to auto focus, but will work in manual focus.

Best place to get lenses I goto is http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
