You won't get a better lens for the money. You can have some fun and get some close up filters to get you a little closer to macro. It's also a great portrait and landscape lens as well.

Great pictures.
I have just ordered the Nikon D200 and I still have my "old" lenses (amongst them the 50 mm) from my Nikon FE2. Seeing your pix will it a interesting mix of old and new equipment.

Thanks for the advice, which close up lense do you use.

Also tell me how the D200 is, I would love to upgrade to that next.

I haven't received my D200 yet, only in another 10 days. Of the "old" Nikon lenses I have the 50 a 28 and a 135 mm. All I need now is for them to be thoroughly cleaned and new UV filters.

I went from the D70s to D200 over a year ago, and it's a much better camera. the sensor, the feel, the buttons on the outside to control everything, and the the focusing are all better.

the 50mm f1.8 is a awesome lens for the price, i use it at every wedding i shoot. the close up lens i have now is the 60mm f2.8 micro. It's amazingly sharp and can focus close to like 3" from the end of the lens!

Watch the DoF

Love this lens. We use it frequently for professional shoots. Couple of things to be careful of, though. It has a color "quality"; it will reproduce colors a little on the cold side, so watch your white balance and if exact color reproduction is a goal, you might want to use a different lens.

Also, it's loads of fun shooting with the ultra low Depth of field at 1.8, but if you're shooting portraits (it's fantastic for portraits) make sure your focus is set exactly right. The DoF is so narrow, if you focus on on the bridge of a nose, then the iris of the subject may be out of focus.

Hey there

You are so right, the focusing is key. I have found that out. You can bo on focus on the eye and the rest is completely gone.

Great for the price though.

With the announcement of the D300 though I think the D200 will be within my reach soon.

The cheapest at present for Body Only is £799.

Given some of the options (Live View, sensor cleaning etc) that will be available on the D300 I wonder if that's worth saving up for? So far I haven't seen any movement on the D200 price to make room on the shelves and I'm not convinced there will be much. I was considering a D200 but it seems the D300 has some features that the extra $300 might be worth paying for.
