Thoughts on Canons

Post Fri Aug 08, 2003 4:47 pm

A friend is looking to buy a 3+ megapixel camera (a Canon). What are your thoughts on the Powershot s45 and the Powershot s400. We're looking for cheapest and best quality. Also, can you recomment any sites w/ good shipping and good prices?

Thoughts much appreciated!

Canon camera

Post Fri Aug 08, 2003 10:00 pm

I have a Canon Powershot S30 which is a 3.2MB camera
I love it, have had it since June 2002, over a year now and no problems at all.

I bought mine at a camera shop because it was my very first digital camera and knew nothing about them, since then I have seen them on ebay for alot cheaper prices, so for my next camera, that is where I will purchase it.

Check the reviews and Canon Talk at http://www.dpreview.com.

Use http://www.pricegrabber.com and http://www.cnet.com to look for good prices. Pay attention the posts made by users. There are some real crooks, especially among the NY shops (B&H and Adorama are good guys).

Amazon is alway a good bet if their price is competitive.

I have a Canon S45. I like the possibility to control just about anything manually. It's almost like an SLR in a compact format. But it's difficult to focus manually. You get help in two ways; the display shows a range scale, and it also shows an enlarged portion of the middle of the image. It's difficult to really see in the enlarged portion if you have focused the camera correctly, so you better go for the range scale. Don't expect manual focusing to be as easy as on an SLR, but it's definitely good to have this possibility.

I have a Canon S400

Post Wed Aug 13, 2003 8:16 pm

I've had my Canon S400 for a couple of months and purchased after much research done on the following websites, http://www.dpreview.com and http://www.imaging-resource.com. I love the size of the camera and most of the pix (sometimes indoor shots are not that great) but miss the 10x optical zoom I had with my Olympus C-2100. BTW, the Olympus has been collecting dust in the cabinet since I've owned the Canon. Therefore, you can see there are trade offs between digital cameras.

Refer to this page.
ttp://www.ficar.com/dgc/digitalcamera/i ... index.html
They are compareing images of s400 and s45 side by side.
Although iamges are no good, but you can see same images from same angle.
Writer concluded that s400 has enough quality of image and it is difficult to find a
difference between them.
Me too.ÅiI'm owner of ixy300Åj

Caution.
Right images are of s400, left are of s45.

I have an S30 and here are some reasons why I like it:
    settings--completely auto or complete control
    great color
small enough to carry around all day on a belt pouch
very easy to get great prints using Canon software

Here is my gallery (just getting it started): http://www.pbase.com/zzcat

S45 should be wonderful

Post Tue Aug 19, 2003 2:24 am

I have the S30 and happy with it, you can check out the pictures I have taken with it on: http://www.pbase.com/uno/japansummer
S45 should be better in some aspects.

S30 has extensive settings (A/S/Manual) which are very important for me. Nevertheless, the battery life can be better, and the close up is not so good

S400 has limited settings but much smaller

I have a Canon AE1, G1, A-70, and a 10D. All have served me well.

I have had very good luck dealing with Onecall. http://www.onecall.com/ They match prices and FedEx is free on most, if not all, cameras.

I am thinking of buying a small compact digital camera. I did some research I select three digital camera but don't know which to choose,

1. PENTAX OPTIO S

2. EPSON L-300

3. CANON IXUS 2 (SD100)

The price i like to spend is like £200 - 300. which would you recommend out of the three above. please reply to me thanks [/list]

It all depends on your preference. S45 allows for close to full manual control of aperture, shutter speed and more but with a slightly larger body compared to the s400. s400 is small and attractive but have very limited manual controls. I would recommend s400 if you are a point and shoot person who doesnt like the idea of fiddling with manual controls when taking shots. But then again, manual control allows for better shots in difficult night conditions.... without the flash of course.

Comparatively which camera is better the A70 or the Canon S45?

I am also thinking of buying a digital Canon camera. I want good quality and don't want to pay too much. What are the differences in btw the A60 and the A70? A60 is cheaper, but are the images worse?

I also saw images for the A20 and was wondering if anyone recommends this camera?
