Question - wide angle lens for canon eos 10d

Post Thu Feb 19, 2004 8:25 am

Hi there!
I am trying to choose wide-angle lens for 10d an I'm a bit confusing. Now i have following choice:
canon ef 16-35 f1:2.8 USM. It is really goot but too expencive as for me
sigma af 17-35 2.8-4 is much cheaper but I'm not sure about quality
also I've found that there are sigma af 15-30 3.5-4.5 that it is quite large (about 130 mm long although 17-35 is just 90mm) and also sigma af 12-24 that is probably too dark (?) f=1/4.5-5.6
So I'm looking for reviews, impressions, advices and so on.
Thanx in advance!

The Sig 15-30 is considered soft at 30, but very good at the wide end. You might also look at the Tamron 17-35 XR Di - an extremely good lens (IMO) which I bought an hour or two after I walked into a store to buy the Canon 17-40 L.

Some of my gallery images were taken with this lens. http://www.pbase.com/wilfredmrand/root

Do your homework and read reviews

Go to your search engine (Google) and just type in the camera size or reviews on size lense. Lots of sights to read and research...also go to local camera store and try the lenses on your camera...focus and shoot in the store. Do a hands on....
I've rented both these lenses for a weekend $17.00 and its like test driving a car...good luck

Hi,

I had a 15-30. Very sharp but it flares too much, even in dim light (I missed a lot of shots due to that) so I traded it for 16-35.

Samples with the 15-30 :

Also consider primes

It's hard to get a good, fast, wide zoom on a budget so consider dropping the zoom and getting a prime or two, they'll generaly be fast, sharp and excellent value.

E.g. Sigma 15 f2.8 fisheye, 20 f1.8 etc and similar from Canon.

Depends on your shooting style, though.

I have a Tokina AT-X 17AF Pro and a Tokina 19-35 AF193. The 17mm is specially good. You can see an example at this link of the 17mm. And this was handheld.

Not expensive lenses and they have good glass.
I don't use the 19-35 any more.
