Aperture problem

Hi,

I have a zoom lens with an f/2.8-3.8. I understand that the f/2.8 increases as you zoom in. But several times when I shot continuously, the aperture increases as I zoomed back. This makes the last few shots darker.

Is it because of shooting while zooming back or is there another explanation?
