Camera Database with sample photos

Post Fri Jul 18, 2003 1:21 am

if you haven't seen it yet, take a look at http://www.pbase.com/cameras

we're building up a database of cameras so that people can view real photos taken with various equipment.

there will gradually be more and more information on the cameras themselves which should be useful or interesting to people shopping for new cameras or learning about old cameras.

the camera database will also be tied into the forums as soon as possible.

I usually use PhotoDeluxe (it's convenient and I haven't really messed with my other bundled editors) but it strips the exif data when I export back to jpg. Would the database eventually key to the keywords or?? to pick up camera data?

The camera database is an excellent addition to Pbase. Many users of a specific camera can compare the quality of their camera versus a camera they are considering as an upgrade or as an additional camera.

Case in point, many Olympus c-700, c-720, and c-730 users have been debating the merits of the new c-740 and c-750 cameras. Now they can actually compare using Pbase.

Regarding the stripping away of Exif information, a program like the free Irfanview can reduce the size of one's image without stripping away the Exif info.

I can do it with a lot of programs. But the question isn't how. It's that there are a huge number of pictures out there and people could easily go through and add camera data through gallery updates. But it's unlikely that folks are going to ruch out and restore and reload exif data individually. Besides, I've got the exif data with the original pics.

Hi there,

The Canon Ixus 400 is also known as the Canon Powershot S400 in other countries of the world, so that would be the place to compare and upload pictures :) I'll be putting some of my own up shortly!

Looks good Slug. Many of the questions on various sites relate to lenses - "which one with my new 10D for landscape" etc etc. Any chance of doing the same thing with lenses - a big ask I know :) .

Cheers

definitely lenses will follow.
still working out a few kinks in organizing the camera bodies, then will start throwing the lenses in there.

Lately I've taken to stripping all the "unnecessary" verbage clutter around my images, including the camera make, date, etc. but after looking at the camera listings topic here, I suppose I might be doing a disservice not only to myself but to viewers looking for examples of images to compare from similar cameras.

My New Year's resolution will be to go back and list the camera used in my shots.

- DC

It's a good idea but on the camera's I've looked at on the database you haven't given any sample photo's in low-light or other difficult conditions. I think that would be much more help to somone comparing camera's as it would show where the camera struggles.

That's not the site's fault, but due to the fact that users may have not uploaded images taken in those conditions. If you want image comparisons for different cameras (note: no apostrophe) you should be looking at a dedicated digital camera review site like http://www/dpreview.com

Ok, my bad (on the photos and the un-needed apostrophe). I'll check that site out, thanks :)
